View Full Version : It's official: Caribbean monk seal is extinct

Mr.Sam

After five years of futile efforts to find or confirm sightings of any Caribbean monk seals — even just one — the U.S. government on Friday announced that the species is officially extinct and the only seal to vanish due to human causes.

Stuff like this, where humans are the cause of the extinction, makes me angry. We got to realize we are not the only important animals in the world!

Aww :(
I love seals.

Its funny how the human race fear extinction, when really we deserve to become extinct. Would be the best thing for this planet tbh.

Just because were the most intelligence species *known*, it doesn't give us the right to extinct other species.

Course they don't care, but they will give the impression that they do. Giving all this "poor old seals" ********.

Mr.Sam

well it has to be 5 years since a sighting to be classed as extinct, and it would have been at least 5 years previous of a low number so not a lot of people would know about them.

Hey how on earth are they suppose to stand a chance against us as we have guns and they definitely don't and even then we pollute the earth so much animals can not evolve quickly enough to be able to resist the effects at the rate we are going.

lol why did people hunt them?
Same reason why they hunted elephants, for the cash of course.....

To be honest, I don't care, never really heard of them and they mustn't of been too interesting if people hunted them and no action was taken sooner "/

Yeah, hence us being the dominant species on earth.
Actually BUGS are the dominant species especially the nasty buggers such as army ants which can literally plow through entire villages like they weren't there eating human and animal alike without any care for reprecussions

But also if kill every animal we will then go extinct our selves due to lack of food due to the food chain going out the window so really it is in our best intrest to not just kill everything.

What are you talking about Humans are the dominant species!

Here is a definition:

1. Exercising the most influence or control.
2. Most prominent, as in position; ascendant.
3. Genetics Of, relating to, or being an allele that produces the same phenotypic effect whether inherited with a homozygous or heterozygous allele.
4. Ecology Of, relating to, or being a species that is most characteristic of an ecological community and usually determines the presence, abundance, and type of other species.
5. Music Relating to or based on the fifth tone of a diatonic scale.

I think you'd find while insects are very important to the planet.. humans have the most influence and control over Earth if we wanted to we could launch a Nuke and wipe out every living thing on the planet. We have the power to cause other species to go extinct... We also control almost 85% of the earths land surface as it says below

Scientists have produced the first map that traces human influence on the natural world, and the numbers are big. Overall, 83 percent of the total land surface and 98 percent of the areas where it is possible to grow the world's three main crops—rice, wheat, and maize—is directly influenced by human activities.

no animal at all does anything for humanity really - but that dosn't give us the right to kill them all :S
what have they ever done TO us is the real question isnt it.. why should we sit there and kill them all, they do nothing to us to give us the right to make a "coat" out of them.

They obviously didn't get arrested because the whole lot of them are dead lol, and no but I'm a sentient creature and human skin coats aren't really in fashion anyway.

I picked up four ants from my garden, then I clapped my hands together and they all died. Gosh, they really are quite dominant!

Also, I can't imagine army ants could eat through full living animals, unless they're on the verge of death.

But also if kill every animal we will then go extinct our selves due to lack of food due to the food chain going out the window so really it is in our best intrest to not just kill everything.

Hence why extinction is bad. The fact of the matter is, most animals are only still alive because we like to eat them and/or they may have cure for human diseases. For example, the crocodile 'healing blood'.
Anyways, Carribean Monk Seal didn't taste nice, screw it.

That was just, a really stupid comment to make.

Explain, please. I'm dying to know what you object to!

I see no reason why there is an argument, a creature went extinct. Its bad, even if they had no purpose on earth. That comment is pretty stupid, because something like the population of a certain fish could go up, then they could overeat another type of fish. Its just unbalancing nature when you take out an animal from the foodchain.

In groups of 3 or 4 they are nothing but in there thousands they are buggers but also it depends on species search up army ant (real one) and you will hate em

But they don't get much things bigger because they have the common sense to run away =/.
