Lewis Hamilton will be demoted ten places down the French Grand Prix grid as a punishment for causing the pit lane crash in today's race at Montreal.

Nico Rosberg will receive the same penalty for his involvement in the incident, as the stewards deemed that both had breached article 16.1 of the regulations by 'causing a collision'.

The former championship leader ran into the back of Kimi Raikkonen while the Ferrari was stopped at a red light in the pit exit, taking both cars out of the race.

The red light was on as the safety car train was passing the pits at the time.
Most of the leaders had dived in for their first stops as soon as the pits opened, but while Raikkonen and eventual winner Robert Kubica noticed the red light and stopped, Hamilton and Rosberg appeared unaware.

Hamilton ploughed into the rear of the Ferrari, and was himself then struck by Rosberg's Williams, which was able to continue after a second stop for a new front wing.

Lewis insisted he had seen the stop light and had just been unable to slow down in time.

"I saw the red light, but by the time I had to stop and I saw the red light it was too late," he told ITV Sport's Louise Goodman.

“It was not a racing incident as such, but I think it’s really unfortunate."

Personally i think this is stupid. It was a inncocent which was catagorly the teams fualt for not alerting the drivers. The team should of been punished not lewis and nicko!

why didn't kimi get a 10 grid drop from last week then? he caused a crash and got nothing. if he did get the 10 place drop lewis wouldn't have crashed into him today.

I think it's cause he wasn't in the pit. Lewis was in the pit and Kimi was waiting for a red light

He did still crash into sutil which indeed is 'causing a collision'.

Yeah but aren't there differences in outside and inside of the pitlane crashes? As Kimi and Nico were waiting at the red light, Hamilton shouldn't have gone. In the Moscow race it was poor control that caused the collision

I expect lewis will be on a one stop next week then, if he qualifys first place he'll start 10th of course and with only one stop 10 places shouldn't be that hard to climb.

11th is it?

'cos then 10 drivers would be above him.

Say if he finishes like 11th after a terrible qualifying, will he just go to 20th?

No 21st.

I disagree with this decision, but seeing as it was in the pit lane, the whole scenario changes. Raikkonen should've got a penalty form Monaco's race - I felt sorry for Sutil then.

Oh and I thought it was funny though 'cause rivght after the crash, the green light appeared 2 seconds later.

Wait, what about if he finishes 15th then!

Fat chance I know but still where would he go?

he'll start last, wasn't it in gp2 that he went down to dead last and ended up 2nd?
he'll be able to get a good finish if he starts 11th-13th and could contend with 1st position.

I see why you all think it's unfair but if you read in detail, the crash is irrelevant and however much we love Hamilton, it was his fault, though his team could of helped.

The 10-grid point drop is for ignoring the red light, it happened to Montoya a few years back and Barrichello and Massa last year I think. If you go through the red light you lose 10 grid spaces in the next grand prix, it would of happened if he crashed into Raikonnen or not. Thus the reason Rosberg is also punished as he failed to stop as well.

Raikonnen didn't cause a crash a fortnight ago, it was purely an error in the car and it was impossible for him to of avoided Sutil, however sad and frustrating that was for Sutil, it's Sport and things like that happen and he can't be punished for that as he broke no rules.

Actually you are incorrect and you are in fact the one who cant read! If you leave the pits when a red light is shwoing you are disqualifyed like Massa was last year, not a 10 place gird drop. The grid drop was given for causing the crash.

changing the subject a little, is it me or does Bourdais seem to always retire early?

I know he has finished a few but most are retires.
