Would it be possible to play that HD DVD on a normal DVD player, or even a blu-ray player (I'm told blu-ray and HD DVD were like competitors though!)? It's probably an obvious question, I assume that you have to purchase a HD DVD player (arnt they discontinued?).

Straight answer.

HD-DVD is not compatible on any player if it is not a HD-DVD player.

DO NOT BUY HD-DVDs, you would be stupid to.

If you have a 360 you can pick up a hd-dvd player for it for about £20

HD is officially dead. Invest in Blu-Ray discs and a PS3 for the cheapest player available.

But HD-DVD failed miserably.

I don't think that's accurate, a PS3 is around £200 and I am sure Harrods (in London, big posh shop) was selling a Sony Blu-ray Player for £149, although adding up the features a PS3 has then it would be cheaper :P

Some blu-ray discs can play in normal DVD players, some can't. You have to find out, but I'm not sure where... The case says nothing!

Sony PS3s are currently the cheapest Blu-Ray players around.

A PS3 is not about £200.. it's more like £300 with no accessories. Anyway, HD DVD is good for backing up data on as the read/write drivers for PC are much cheaper than the blu-ray ones
