It varies depending on location. Around my area Orange and Tiscali are the best while Virgin Media, AOL (obviously) and BT suck terribly. That's alot for 8MB, are they charging you for speeds higher than that?

Hmmm, might be an idea to ring them asking if your line can support 8MB and why they are not supplying that. If they can't supply you with 8MB then ask for them to charge you for 4MB.

I want 20MB broadband, but BT won't update my exchange :(

edit: Yes, the company bulldog was the first company in the UK to bring out 16MB.

Oh I've not payed much attention to companies other than recently. Have you taken into consideration getting in contact with Tiscali over the price you pay at the moment, it would be easier really, than going to other companies.

You'll be using Tiscali through a BT wholesale connection rather than an LLU connection.

Try and see if you can get Virgin media where you are. According to that some areas around your exchange are VM enabled.

Wherever you live, we're there

You can get Virgin Media services wherever you live! Your home is in a non-cable area, so that means you can choose any of our great non-cable services and we'll deliver them down your BT phoneline.

Yay!! But arn't Virgin media asking websites to pay!!?

I'm unsure.

You'd be connecting to Virgin Media through a BT wholesale package as your area does not have cable access. Though it seems these packages are the only thing available where you are.

Well done.

Thanks. Although if you were a little brighter you would have seen the speed below @ 2.4MiB/sec which is saying that my speeds are good, therefore my ISP is good.

Until you've downloaded 3GB, then your throttled like hell.

Lol to 5Mbit sure. That's still 530~KiB/sec

I usually only download at night / early morning so I don't have to worry about the limits I just download till I'm done.

I will pay £10 if you can find anywhere it says that you are guarenteed 8mb - 10mb all of the time. Also, VM have never done a 8mb cable package and are updating 4mb > 10mb.

EDIT: VM also don't use BT Exchanges, they are FTTC (Fibre To the CURB). Co-Axel for the last bit before anyone comes along and tries to argue they are FTTH (Fibre To the Home).

VM use BT wholesale packages at exchanges where FTTC is not available.

I always reccomend BT.

Things are put straight forward, you get the support you need, a free homehub and hubphone, and now the BTtoGo. For £30 a month, its good.

I was talking about the cable part of VM which he was talking about not the useless ADSL which everyone should avoid.
