So you insult me by saying I have no knowledge of hardware nor software because I rather back XP as opposed to Vista? That's ridiculous. It's personal preference. I don't care if Vista is supposed to have improved RAM management, it's pointless due to how much more system resources Vista occupies. (I've been forced to use Vista on my laptop for a year now) the user account control is pointless, many useful applications are incompatible with Vista (including a handful of games. FS9 wont work for many with the aero experience, and I've tried it on two Vista machines to discover that my display driver fails..not impressed). My Intel Centrino Duo came with Home Premium, and I couldn't even handle the aero-experience without sticking an extra 2gbs of ram in my system. XP beats Vista in benchmarking tests (quite disappointing, seeing as it's with SP1) http://news.cnet.com/Windows-XP-outshines-Vista-in-benchmarking-test/2100-1016_3-6220201.html . Here's a breakdown I got from http://blogulate.com/content/xp-beats-windows-vista/:

http://images.anandtech.com/graphs/windows%20vista_01310740116/13897.png

The only features I admire on Vista are the indexing feature and the extra undo options in mspaint. I can get Google desktop and get indexing on XP.

The minimum specifications for XP are also much lower than Vista. HTC is selling 800mhz CPU, 512MB UMPCs equipped with Vista...that’s totally ridiculous.

If the resources are available, why can't it use them?

I found it useful, It will actually allow YOU to decide what runs as admin and what doesn't...

Well, I ran FS9 perfectly fine on Windows. The only game that turns of Aero for me is FSX... and that is to improve performance I guess. All applications work fine with Vista? :S

Actually my dad has a UMPC with those specs, fair enough, not 512mb RAM but the CPU doesn't make too much of a difference.

Benchmarks tell you nothing. Apart from the Networking one (which I never even mentioned), nothing is telling me speeds of the OS. The other thing is is just some score some piece of software gives out to every tom, **** and harry OS. XD

Anyway. Yes it is opinion. But imo schools need to start transitioning to the latest OS. We can't use XP forever.

They should be switching.I wish they'd use Vista as well but the main reason is because they use huge and expensive laser printers all over the school and it'll cost a lot to replace them all for Vista compatibility. My school also uses a lot of old CAD software from around 2003 (it's piss poor stuff) and there's no hope of Vista support with that.

Office 07 is not recommend for schools because it's got a new interface which could confuse users according to a report. What the hell is that meant to mean? We've all got to use Office 07 one day so we've all got to be confused at some point, it's a lot more easier to use anyway and newb-friendly once you get used to it. I've found people who are experienced with the previous Office's struggle to use 07 at first, but for students it should be an easy exchange? Anyone using Office 07 at school out of interest?

Yes, drivers are not entirely Microsoft's fault. however it doesn't change the facts that Vista occupies more resources and has a worse benchmark than XP. Also as the other user has said it has been out for two years, so I would presume improved drivers would be available.

It's rediculous, we aren't going to have Office 03 till we are dead are we? lol

I do enjoy office 2007. The new interface probably would intimidate beginning users.

It has been out for almost 2 years now? They should be switching.

Being out for a certain amount of time is now justification to switch? It's what Microsoft has accomplished in that duration. SP1 did speed things up, but not substantially.

Since when do Microsoft make full computers?

I never said they did. They don't see any harm with providing HP and HTC with Windows Vista, as opposed to XP for their UMPCs.

Well there is nothing wrong. Ever tried running the Vista Starter version?

Why would Microsoft want us all to use an old OS when they could be pushing out their new one, making money and making most users happy. I wouldn't go back to XP, and I know most people on Overclock.net wouldn't either, and they know what they are talking about.

If you buy Vista Ultimate, you are allowed to downgrade to XP for free :P Ever been bored enough to read the installation TOS? XD

What's Mixcraft? :)

Mixcraft is verry mutch like the program garrageband on the mac. It is quite a basic but yet powerful program. Not usually used for high level recodings though.

Microsoft is basically forcing users to go to Vista. They sign contracts with manufacturers to use Vista, stop selling XP and eventually drop the support for it. It's Vista Basic edition, not Starter. It's like having all the problems of Vista, with the least advantages. Go to EEEuser's forums. The general consensus about WIndows Vista is that it's bloated, which it is. My Acer sadly came with Home Premium and they wont allow me to upgrade to XP for free.

It is a handy application, indeed!

Any business would do what MS is doing ¬_¬ It's like saying, why did Apple bring out the 3rd Gen iPod Nanos and stop selling the 1st gen Nanos :/

It's not the same thing. Microsoft can make companies use Vista by making contracts, and refusing them service if they fail to abide.

Fine? I suspect we would all do the same if we were owners of huge businesses.

Isn't that like saying:

"Oh I just LOVE your muffins" which in that logic, is like saying you're a baker?

I had a look at the computers in the art department at my college, and I think they used a suped up XP/Vista hybrid, it doesn't act like XP normally does :P

Vista is on most of the school PCs except the ones they couldn't be bothered to upgrade, which are still on XP. I don't think there's any method to that madness, the XP ones seem to be scattered around the school in no particular order lol

The design and art computer labs at my uni are solely OS X.

The regular computer labs are primarily XP, although there's a few Macs in there running OS X.
