View Full Version : The whole "Approve post" thing.

I was just wondering, since many people are always asking why their posts need to be approved, wouldn't it be a good idea to put some sort of notification (if possible) in the registration process? Just to let them know.

Once again, I don't know if this is possible.

edit; had a quick idea, or a PM to their inbox as soon as they are active?

They could just edit the message which says their message needs to be approved and add why it needs to be approved :)

or that, I guess doing both wouldn't hurt, then if people ask, well if people ask why then God help them?

They should have an automatic pm system explaining that the post approval is in place and information about vip vvip

That could be added to the welcome PM which is already in place.

upon registering every member gets a welcome PM from "System" so could simply add to it about the whole approval process, and could also have a ntice for moderated members about it (i.e. unregistered members have the notice about how to registier at top of homepage)

I like that idea.

On vBulletin, you can now add messages at the top of the page too (using their new feature, rather than editing the templates manually) :) So they could do that too.

e.g.
Find out why your post needs to be approved first. Click HERE for more information.

Very good suggestion. Would anybody be able to pm me a copy of the welcome message so I could look at it? Its a long time since I joined. :)

It'll be less work not to aprrove them. A spam bot will appear and post a few times, meaning less effort to get rid of them. Approving posts takes alot of work for hundreds of members, most of which aren't spam bots. Isn't there a way to have the verification image appear for posts? Spambots most of the time only recognise the registration page verification image, not usually the ones afterwards.

You beat me to it, lol.

Anyway, to expand on that, say you set up a notice for everyone with 1-15 posts saying something like 'You may have noticed that your posts have to be approved, bla bla bla. Once you get to 15, you can post normally, bla bla bla.'

That is a good idea as well actually.

I agree. It would stop the threads asking why lol.

I reckon that adding it to the welcome PM is good, and also adding a Notice for it. I'll ask MAD about getting a notice added for it.

Why not turn "approve posts" off and turn the question based reigsterion page on.

So when you go to register you have to enter a answer to a question such as

"What is one plus one, (Answer two/2)"
Removes bots..

But as someone said its less work for the Smods to remove 4/10 posts created by new users then it is approving 10/10 posts though.

I actually requested for it to be added to the welcome PM a few days ago. *Passes buck* :P

The post approval thing isn't a lot of work at all. Contrary to popular belief, there aren't all that many posts that need approving per day. smods have a button in the modcp which they can hit to approve posts and moderators can appove them if they come across them. Approving a post takes about 5 seconds, so even if an smod has a backlog of 50 posts to complete it'll only take him/her 2 or 3 minutes. It won't be going anywhere any time soon ;)

Alex is right (as always :P), approving posts is a matter of clicking a box, selecting 'approve post' from the drop down box then clicking the little button.
i havent got tired of using it, but then again new people dont tend to flock straight to the entertainment section

People spam, obviously, but they can do this after such and such a period :P
