Hi. I've forgotten a password to a word document and need to open it. If possible i want to avoid having to download special software. I did find when looking around, someone who said that when the document is in rtf version it opens, but how to change it into rtf format? Does anyone know this, or any other way in which to open the document?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

First, open the document and do a "Save As..." specifying Rich Text Format (RTF). It'll end up being called something.rtf.
Now open the RTF file by double-clicking on it. It should look identical to the original Word file.
Final step: save the RTF file with a new name as a Microsoft Word format document. That's all there is to it. You've sidestepped the read-only lock on the file your boss sent you and are good to go.

Just tested this - just had the same problem. It doesn't have an available option for Save As?

I doubt it will work as the contents of the document will be encrypted using the password.

Yeah that's correct. There are programs on the internet that can do it but none are free. They do work though, I got one where it'll do 1 page for free, and it did it correctly with no errors or mistakes.

The old microsoft offices let you put a password on them too not just the 07 one, cant remember how to do it on older versions though, just type "password document" on the annoying paperclip guy

you need the security thing installed, usually requires the disk / download and you do it that way. You can do it on all versions of word :)
