View Full Version : KEYBOARD TYPING!
I remember like a good 2-5 years ago, I was like omgosh "WOW" people can type without looking at the keyboard... I was like I gurantee I wouldn't be able to do that in the future... and then he hit me, I started to go on the computer alot and then strangely started to type without looking at the keyboard.
I am wondering.
Can you NOT look at your keyboard and type?
If so, what age did you start typing without looking at the keyboard?
(only say the age, if you are happy for others to know)
Not that it is REALLY personal, is it :P?
Reason why I am asking, just wondering if it is a "skill" LOL!
13/14 LOL.
I've been able to touch-type for a good 3-4years now. My mother helped me too. (:

I would of been twelve I imagine, it looks like one of them impossible things but it seems such a doddle now.
Can anyone here draw a keyboard with all the letter keys in the correct places (With out looking at a keyboard obv), I can almost do it but I haven't tried in a while.

I've been touching typing for years! I think Year 7 or 8 I started to properly touch type. It varies though on spelling, on forums I barely put much effort and end up typing the wrong words while in essays or formal letters/emails it comes out reasonably neat :P
tbh we all our quite clever lol.
Touch typing imo is a quite clever skill *not being big headed*
But come on, when I go my class, hardly any1 can do it in my class.

Ive been able to do it since i was about 12 lol. On the F and J key of the keyboard there are little lumps to help you know where your fingers are :P

I can type sentences perfectly with my eyes closed, it was always fun to do at school because others were learning to touch type but I could already do it, at a quick speed also, so I was typing sentences faster and with my eyes closed :P
I think it's an increasingly common skill though, it's just a case of in the past it being typewriters instead of a PC keyboard.
(ironically I'm typing this with my hands under the newspaper.. and also I think I started when I was about 15?)

03-07-2008, 07:31 PM
Yeah, I can.
Also I can touch type and have been able to for about 5 years. Everyone at school is always jelous at the way I can type with two hands, make mistakes (but also know when I have without looking at the screen) and then type sentances really quick with my eyes closed.
Im just like, so what? lmao
I can touch type, I dont need to look but i can trype words etc, BUT if you asked me to draw out the layout of the keyboard, i wont be able to do it, i just know that its there lol

It's a really easy thing to do after a while you get used to doing it and I've known how to do it for about, 2 years now or even longer. I couldn't draw out the layout of the keyboard, I just understand how to do it.
I would call it a skill, but alot of peple can do it.
I hate people that "woodpeck" the keys...

Yeah, I can touch type but if it's a dark room so I can't see the keyboard I make a lot of mistakes, weird hey?
I've done those things like typeracer where you have to type out the paragraph to race others to see how fast you are and stuff, I'm kind of good at those but I make a lot of mistakes at the start.

I can as well :)
Started in year 7 or 8, but do some typos at times because I fast.
Also same as special in school people are like "WOAH" etc.
But yeah it's a skill xD
Yes, touch typing grows on you the more you use a computer, so it's inevitable you will get the "skill".

I don't think it's a skill. Once you start going on the computer, you get familiar with the keys and where they are, etc. Then it just becomes like nothing for you to find the keys without looking because you've gotten so familiar with them.
I am able to type without looking ever since I was like 10.

That's like saying "Once you start juggling you get familiar with the items you're throwing, where they are and you can do it without looking because you've gotten so familiar to juggling"

I can touch type but very slowly if I do. I can nearly type all the letters without looking but that's with only two fingers from each hand.

Since the start of school 5/6 year old. They diddent print the letters on the keyboards. so you would learn how to touch type quicker. We did alot of work with the keyboard starting off, like diagrams and tests, but it has proven to be a success and i've been able to touch type for a good while now.

I've been able to do it since I was about 12 maybe. The only reason I can do it is because of Habbo and MSN haha, plenty of people can touch type now though. I love watching the mother struggle to type, it's literally 3 words a minute for her.
Id say around year 4/5 a person came in and taught us , like what fingers where but i just use 2 fingers for somereason im faster than using both hands , on bebo my typing speed is 60 wpm so that explains it

I started to type fast and not look at the keyboard around 9/10 years old. In the end you will have a bone sticking out at your hand if you are not comftable.
I can do it quite well, not amazing really :p I dont type enough really lmao, but I just touch typed this.
The keyboards in school are different to my one at home, this one has quite big keys lol where as in school they are normal

Ever since I started piano I can go without looking at the keyboard.
Its just because you become accustomed to the rhythm and path of the words that you type.

Well since where I live, when in elementary/middle school, one of our main IT grades was touch-typing.
It really developed our skill, I can type without looking at the keyboard easy. I can usually type from 90-110 WPM.
12, I think. I find it very easy - Practice makes perfect!:P

Idk when I first started, but I can do it pretty well though. My brain moves faster than my hands do so they get confused and start trying 3 words at once so I make loads of mistakes, but I'm usually pretty good at it. I sometimes miss the key because I have big fingers and hit the key next to it as well :(
I've been able to touch type for a while now, but I've found, if I look at the keyboard when typing, I make a lot of mistakes, the same if I am at school. I make a lot of mistakes if people are watching me.

I'd say about 10-11, I started using touchtype without looking rather fast, my next challenge will probably to learn the DVORAK layout with touchtype but thats quite the way off tbh. I only knew it because I used to go on a game which required ALOT of grammar, and I just hated looking at the keyboard constantly so I learnt to do it in about one week, at an ok speed? :S
Tell you what, if you really wanna prove yourself as a touchtypist, find someone with a DVORAK keyboard and learn how to type QWERTY on it. You'll think you're hard as rock, because they have no buttons to relate to. I usually refer to the buttons with the ridges on (F & J) but DVORAK doesn't have that... Well, the one I used didn't yet I went as just the speed I would on a normal keyboard. =P

I can touch type pretty well - I usually look at what I am typing on the screen instead of on the keyboard. I've been touch typing for probably around five years? I hardly make mistakes, and it's fun to do it at school when the teacher is looking at you with their mouth wide open because i'm writing an essay perfectly, but looking out the window.

On Bebo I surprisingly came out as 118 words per minute. Some asked me how I cheated, but I can assure you I did not.
I've been able to touch type for a fair few years. I guess cause I use to go on Habbo and MSN alot, I just began to kick *** at it.
If you asked me to draw a keyboard layout, there is no way I could do it.

A long, long time.
I can type pretty fast too, I used to take a business class and we took a quick typing test everyday, anyway... the highest I've hit is 160WPM (words per minute), I don't know if I can still do it.
Anyway, I probably started to do it around 11.
I can kinda draw out the keyboard, I had to do that in business too, I think I scored around 96%
i can do
300

I've never noticed if I look or not if that makes sense. But now that I think about it it's 50/50. I sometimes look but not all of the time.
