Excessive use of 'lol'

I wasn't sure if this should be in the spam thread, since many people probably don't care...

Surely the use of the word 'lol' (laugh out loud if you didn't know) has gone way too far.
I'm not saying I don't use it, I'm guilty of over using it too. I looked at a conversation history with my friend, and counted 128 uses of lol in one conversation (lasting roughly 6 hours).
These days, i think it kind of means "I have read what you just said and I have nothing to say in return so I'll just say lol".
The one thing that irritates me about it is the people who actually use it totally randomly, after about 5 minutes of not typing, just to start a conversation again.
Plus, most of the time they clearly are not laughing out loud. They probably aren't even making any sort expression on their face whatsoever.
But enough of me whining, what do you think?

I purposely try to avoid saying it, but for some reason on the forum I say it more than I do on MSN -shrugs-.

Yeah people use it too much but its the kind of way of indicating that they're being friendly to you. Although, it works both ways...
If I really am laughing I just say Rofl, even though I'm not! :D

Im kinda like that.. if i have nothing better to say i will just say lol so it doesnt look like im ignoring the person. Of course im not really laughing out loud, sometimes a small giggle? Infact.. a small giggle inside my head? lol.. If i find something really funny i use lmao.. or rofl etc :P
