View Full Version : Equivalent of Vertigo with fire

Recently I started getting the urge to touch the flame when the cooker's on. The urge keeps getting worse, and I feel angry and upset when I keep getting the urge.
I know exactly what'll happen if I do it - I'll burn myself severely - but I still get a voice in my head telling me to do it. Usually I'd just try forget about it, but unlike vertigo, the cooker's on every day pretty much. I'm just worried the urge will overcome my common sense. I've spoken to my parents already, my mum just said it's not uncommon sometimes, and of course, vertigo is common. But obviously they can't just remove all sources of flames from me. Sometimes I feel fine, and just forget about it because of this advice, but sometimes (especially when I'm on my own) I get the stupid urge again. It's getting worse and worse and I'm actually starting to fear myself.
Ugh please help. Anyone had similar problems? :(

Well yes I'd go to one if all else failed, but I made this thread to see if anyone else had it, and whether they had advice... I wouldn't have asked otherwise.

I used to have something liek this, while the fire was on I used to have an urge to put my foot in it and I kept doing it for days until one day my foot hit some coal and the cola came out and ruined the carpet and burned my foot, after that I just haven't felt the urge.

Lol, so I should just test it to learn a lesson? It would probably work but I'd rather not burn my hand on purpose. The problem is, if someone said they had this problem before I started getting it, I'd just be like "well don't stick ur hand in it u fool" but I can't explain the urge. It's so annoying I feel like I'd rather be dead than risk doing it.

Yeah I know, but like...Dno, pretend to touch it and get someone to keep hitting you with something like on the arm when you get near it, maybe your body will learn fire means pain and you won't feel the urge?
I know what you mean by an urge, but im not sure how you can stop it. When i had certain urges, they went away after about a month of not giving in to them, but they still crop up now and again. You've just really got to try and control yourself, almost force yourself not to do it.

Yeah... good idea but I've already burnt myself in the past. Not intentionally. I have the feeling if I did do it, I'd just keep wanting to do it. I've also been trying to work out why im getting the urge, and I'm trying to work out what happened right before I started gettin the urges, but it's no use, it seems totally random. I keep getting reassurance and help from my family, then i feel better, but whenever I'm on my own I get the urges. I think it may happen every time I'm on my own, left with my own thoughts. Which may be a slight problem since I'm often on my own.
Anything bad happen to you recently? Any Stress? Something like that may be the cause behind almost wanting to burn yourself

Quite the opposite of stress. I've just finished my GCSEs, and my 11 week holiday has started. I am however away from home, and I've been really bored recently, because I'm babysitting my cousins for a week (they're not stressful though). It may be because I'm homesick I suppose. But that seems a bit random.
The urge isn't a desire to inflict pain on myself. It's more like curiosity, even though I know what will happen.
Hmm, very odd. Well, perhaps the best thing to do may be to seek professional advice. Unless anyone else has had this sort of experience...

I've searched the net, some people have said they feel the same urges, but it doesn't seem to bother them. Thanks for help bot of you. +rep.

Yeah that would stop me from doing it, but then I'd feel like a mental patient who has to be kept away from dangerous objects.

I have this exact "problem", it's as if I will get a thrill off hurting myself, or from this urge. Basically, you have the urge to mess with fire, and as explained to me, it's pyromania.
Don't worry, it soon dies down.
