I am staying at my Nan and Grandads house this week.

They do not have a wireless router :(

If I connect to another unsecured network that I can find around the area, is it illegal?

technically yes but they most likely wont find out

What would consequences be if they did find out?

And I would of thought surely if they leave their network unsecured then that is their own fault?

It's not like I'm using it for downloading etc anyway, just for browsing the net and checking emails etc.

they wouldn't do anything if they found out

They could try take legal action but it's highly doubtfull they are going to become aware of it unless they are operatives of MI5 or something.

But i doubt much would become of it if they did find out.

they may just be a little annoyed with you thats all :P

their fault for leaving it unsecured, they cant expect nobody else to use it once in a while, and even if they do decide to prosecute you'd most likely get a warning or small fine

OK that's cool.

It's just I don't think I could go a whole week without the internet ;)

What bout Windows Live etc, still OK to use?

I wouldn't rely too heavily on it though, depending on how far away the router is it might be a poor connection. Makes trying to talk on msn extremely frustrating :P

I'm getting 1 or 2 bars most of the time.

Therefore it is staying connected, which is good :)

If they did find out you could just say like 'oh sorry I thought that was the wireless router for this house' :)

Haha, somehow I don't think they'd fall for that one.

I think it's their problem if they leave it unlocked, I wouldn't worry yourself with it.

If they are silly enough to leave it unlocked, I highly doubt they will find out :P

If you get caught, all you get-away is with a warning.
Happened to my brother mates, his mum and dad took his internet, so he went (hacked) onto his neighbours internet connection.

My laptop sometimes auto-connect to neighbours router. Anyway even if they did find out nothing would be done.

I think its illegal, but if they find out then they wont care. But they could use a packet sniffer to check what you are viewing on the web and if you fill out any forms, they can check the data you input.

I highly doubt they would do that if they left it unlocked in the first place :P

If he "hacked" it then that's different, this one is just open.

Highly doubt they'd find out, if they did then I doubt they'd find you. :P

Put it this way, if the neighbours where clever enough to find out who was on their network, then they'd of been clever enough to of secured their network.

Urrgh, I hate it when people say "It's their own fault for leaving it unsecured." People don't feel the need to, they think people will be decent enough not to use someone else's connection which they don't contribute to or have asked permission for. It's illegal because you're using something for free, which others have paid for.

They can gain access to your info though.

I'm pretty sure if they don't know how to secure their network, then they won't know how to gain access to my info!?

It's likely they could though, they might be the sort of people who wait for people like you to steal stuff from :P
