Sony has confirmed our report (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=186811) that the 80GB PlayStation 3 will launch in Europe shortly.
SCEE president David Reeves confirmed the console will go on sale at GBP 299 / EUR 399 on 27th August in Europe, except for Russia which follows a fortnight later.
"We will be doing promotional bundles from the middle of September to the end of December at various prices," Reeves said at a Sony event in LA today.
"The 80GB replaces the 40GB. Please do not ask me if we're going to go down in price for the 40GB because I will give you the answer, the answer is no," Reeves said.
"This has been planned by Kaz who is here today and the team for many, many months. We have very, very few 40GBs, especially in the UK market, and we'll be out of stock probably by the time we launch on August 27th the 80GB."

yep all it is that you get double the hard drive out the box but you can upgrade it anyway by buying any old standard laptop hard drive

The 80GB replaces the 40GB
Why do they keep doing this? seems very pointless to me, pople must know that all you need to do for more space is to buy a cheap hdd and simply just pull out the old one.
We have very, very few 40GBs, especially in the UK market
wonder why that is, oh yeah, becuase the space is rubbish, it costs a bomb, they removed backward compatibility, card readers and about £3 worth of usb ports.
They can sort all the problems out if they just give the 60GB version back, ive had mine since release and its been fine.

Was very happy when i read this. 3 days before my birthday and have been saving up to get a 60gb. but found out the 80gb dosent do any compatability with ps2 games. which is really crap =/ so decide if iw ant an 80 or 60 now..

Some of the 40GB ones have backward compatibility. On the browser bit of the home page theres a page and it has numbers which refer to that on your console. Theres like 3 or 4 numbers that have backwards compatibility and mine did :)
I spent £320 on mine like 2 months ago with GTA and its only a 40gb, should've waited and got 80gb for near enough the same price :O

thats a lie, they removed the emotion chip from them which ment the BC was no longer there unlike the 60GB which still has the emotion chip

Decided just to find myself a 60Gb . 80Gb that is getting released is just the 40Gb with larger HD. Taken out the software emulation the US one had. -.-' o well dont need the extra 20Gb anyway.

Meh, I have a 40GB one and that does me just fine. I've got my PS2 under it so not bothered about the backwards compatibility. I didn't know you can upgrade the memory? I didn't even know you can open it up :P

I read it on the PS3 page so must be true, and just found this on the website;
40GB PLAYSTATION 3 System
This model of the PLAYSTATION 3 system is designed to play PLAYSTATION®3 format software and has limited backward compatibility. This system is not compatible with, and will not play, PlayStation 2 format software. Some PlayStation format software may play on this system.
I can't find it on the console browser now.

Yea i still have my ps2 but its ages ^^; bits have broken ect. and the point was to get rid of my ps2 when i got a ps3 and just keep my fave ps2 games out im sure ps3 could play the big titles.. plus wont have enougth ( mind gone plank for that word -.-) room to keep both up :(

Should have looked after it more I had my one at launch and it still works same as my launch day PlayStation and that still works so backwards compatibility doesn't bother me anyway I would advise getting a 60GB version due to it have hardware emulation if ya really want it as you can just upgrade the hard drive any day with any old laptop hard drive.

lol i did take care of it was my brother who broke it and then i kinda just gave looking after it because i was going to buy the slim one but then heard about ps3 and didnt bother.
My Megadrive is still in excellent condition ^_^ but yes either getting a 60 if i can find one.. think the only good place is gamestation. or get the 80 and just get a slim later on

yeah theres a panel on the left of the console that you pull off, all you then do is unscrew one thing and pull out the HDD and put any other standard laptop one in :)
