Man jailed after 'shaking' baby

A man has been sentenced to nine and a half years in prison for shaking a two-month-old baby so hard it was left severely brain-damaged.

Donald Loudon, 26, from Newmains, North Lanarkshire, tried to dodge justice by blaming the child's mother for the horrific injuries.

Judge Ian Peeble QC said it had been an "wholly appalling" crime.

He said Loudon had taken his bad temper out on the child. The baby's mother said the sentence was not long enough.

During the trial, the High Court in Glasgow had heard how the child, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was examined at Glasgow's Yorkhill Hospital for Sick Children.

Consultant paediatrician Dr Andrew Watt said that scans showed "very extensive" and "irreversible" brain damage.

What on earth possesses people to do things like this? Why would he do that to a baby. People like this should get life imprisonment.

I feel sorry for the mother. It takes time and effort to go through pregnancy and to give birth. Her poor child.

The significance is that it's 2 months old not the sadness of the crime. A baby is hardly strong enough to hold it own head up in it's first few months, shaking the head will so easily damage the babies brain as it's so delicate. There's frequently reports of childminders doing this, and the effects will live with the baby and parents forever for just a brief moment of anger. However I must admit the sentence is fair, I think 9 years is reasonable and worst of all he'll live with that for the rest of his life for just lashing out.

I can understand that he got angry.. but why take it out on a baby =/

take it out on the wall instead. nine years is a long time though. He will only do half or two thirds of the time.
