Emo to be made illegal in Russia?

A new Russian law could make being an emo kid illegal in the eastern European country.

Legislation is currenting being formulated in Russia to heavily regulate emo websites and ban emo and goth dress style in schools and government buildings.

The new laws are apparently being driven by fears that these "dangerous teen trends" encourage depression and suicide.

The legislation was presented last month at a hearing held by the State Durma, where critics claimed that the "negative" emo culture encourages anti-social behaviour and glorifies suicide.

Emo kids were described as teenagers who wear black, have facial piercings and black hair with fringes that "cover half the face", reports The Guardian

The weekend saw mass protests by Russian emo kids.

In Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, where laws are already being implemented, protestors in a march held signs saying "A Totalitarian State Encourages Stupidity".

Dmitry Gilevich of Russian emo band MAIO stepped in backing the protests, saying: "Expressing psychological emotions is not forbidden by law."

However, emo critics remain unconvinced.

Alexander Grishunin, an adviser to bill sponsor Yevgeny Yuryev, described a ban as necessary, stating: "This is the first step in the public discourse."

The moves in Russia follow criticism of the genre in the UK earlier this year, which saw My Chemical Romance fans protesting at the offices of British newspaper The Daily Mail over their coverage which linked emo with suicide.

The whole idea of them doing this is to try and cut down teen depression, self harm and suicide. Now this is just me, but surely if you're in that state of mind then the last thing you need is someone taking away your sense of identity and treating you like criminals. I mean, emo being the cause of depression is just a very small minority - what about the rest of the kids who are depressed because of school, family and all that? Couldn't they put the time, money and effort into setting up help for these kids and not trying to stamp out one very weak source of it?

I think when a chavs kill themselves it's linked to accidental death, they're not that smart by stereotype definition and what exactly is emo music? I think the rule is focusing on self-harm, although the clothing style is a bit depressing to look at.

It's a lame fashion at best, I don't really see what's so good about it. "Emo" hair is just the hair most people have when their hair is medium sized. You either have it sticking up, or combed to one side (unless you really want to walk around with hair in your eyes :P). Also, I think the definition the Russian's used is focusing on Goths :P

It's clear from them videos that the new look isn't remotely "emo" but upbeat. And tbh Aiden have never been emo, but "post-hardcore" and "horror rock".

& i have only ever met one person, as well as me, around there who doesn't do drugs,

Yeah, killed by chavs mate. Emo isn't a fashion fyi, it's a mindset, it's short for emotional (or better known, emotionally unstable). The meaning of emo has literally been warped into something of a buzz word which everyone feels they need to be part of. The 'emos' I see everyday are loud, obnoxious and have a good time without considering anyone else. Is it just me, or does that more like describe the mindset of a chav? Don't be a crowdfollower, it's really depressing. I like MCR and bands like that, so what, I like the songs... And on another point, since when did Emo also become a musical genre? If it gets passed, then you'll notice that the 'emos' will only rebel like any other teen group would, against their government. It's like the whole punk scene against the US government because the government are ******s. You can't stop something that isn't there though, emo isn't the problem at all, it's the kids who think theyre something that theyre not & they grow upon that.

On the bright side though, if the russian government do pass the law, then there could be an increase in people going into the army! That is a good way of getting killed... heh.

True, but the only way to tackle something is to ban the 'uniform'. It's the only way they can be identified, but emos will always live on but not under the stereotypical all-black, sidefringe crap (which does my head in).

Now I'm going to put myself in it, but I think myself as an emo because I'm so emotionally torn. It's just what I think sometimes, it gets me feeling distressed. I don't ask for attention, I just go by my own way. I don't self proclaim, or dress like a stereotypical emo because I dont want the attention which most teenagers crave.

I wouldn't say they were banning being depressed, they're banning emo, which have a negative effect on people and then people act depressed and probably end up convincing themselves they really are depressed so they do stupid things.

I don't care how people dress, but any websites encouraging self-harm or glorifying suicide should definitely be made illegal. The government shouldn't label people like that but I think they do sometimes have a point and it can be sorted out if it's done properly.

It is their choice if they wish to follow that advice.
