Fire is tearing through the historic pier at Weston-super-Mare.

Television pictures show flames tearing through the partly-wooden pavilion at the end of the historic structure, which opened in 1904.
It houses arcade games, rides, cafes and fast-food outlets.
Firefighters are at the scene tackling the flames, as smoke billows high into the air.
Sky News cameraman Chris Pratt, at the scene, said: "It's very depressing - the pier is an icon of Weston.
"It's surreal seeing something which has been loved by so many people over the years going up in smoke."
Avon Fire and Rescue said six fire engines and 30 firefighters are battling the blaze, which is believed to have started in the west tower.
A spokesman said there were no reports of any injuries.
The summer season at the beach resort is now in full swing and crowds are beginning to gather at the site.

such a shame. been to weston-super-mare pier many times.

And the rock climbing wall, actually really sad because I was there 2 weeks ago and was planning on going back next week. My nan's really sad because she owns a farm in Brean which is like five minutes away from WSM.
Image I took from the wheel thing two weeks ago:

I go to weston every other weekend with my dad becuase he lives there and we usually go out with step mum for a drink and the pier is just so nice, even if you didnt go on any rides, just to walk along it is really nice its a real shame.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was done for the insurance claim. I know that it wasn't taking in as much money as it should've been doing.

True, Because we havn't had that nice weather recently. But they have just had a rennovation and the owner is in spain. Oh well lol.

Well it had just been purchased for a few million, recently redone and had the new go kart track installed into it.
if it was an insurance claim why did they do it up before hand?
I heard it was a fire in the kitchens.

@WEH8OXFORD: it had only just opened for the season

Goodness knows if these things are Insurance Claims it's difficult to tell in this case but it looks a really good place from what you've all been saying and looking at it's website.
But building a pier out of wood was always inviting it.

Well that would be exactly the reason, they spend millions on the pier, than they realise the money coming in is little and no one likes it anymore.
I think on Wikipedia it says deep-fat fryers may have caused it. Someone must have been in there though.

It was in Weston, I don't know where about tho.
Doubt they'll be able to save any of it tho, most of it's wood and it'd be to dangerous :(.
It's just really shocking it happend tbh.
