What work can you do

16 – 18 year olds

If you are over school leaving age (see under heading General rules on employment (http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/life/employment/young_people_and_employment.htm#Generalrulesonempl oyment)) and under 18, there are special restrictions on doing certain types of work. These are:


work which you are not physically or mentally capable of doing
work which brings you into contact with chemical agents, toxic material or radiation
work which involves a health risk because of extreme cold, heat or vibration.

You are only allowed to do the work above under the following circumstances:


where it is necessary for your training, and
where an experienced person is supervising you, and
where any risk is reduced to the lowest level that is reasonable.

These rules do not apply if you are doing short term or occasional work in a family business or in a private household, and this is not considered to be harmful to you.
Children and young people under school leaving age (England and Wales only)

No one under school leaving age (see under heading General rules on employment (http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/life/employment/young_people_and_employment.htm#Generalrulesonempl oyment)) can be employed in work other than light work. You are not allowed to do work which is likely to be harmful to your safety, health, development, or work that will affect your attendance at school or participation in work experience. You are not allowed to work:-


in a factory or in construction work
in transport
in a mine
on a registered merchant ship.

The local authority where you live may also have some extra rules, called by-laws, about the employment of children and young people in your area. You should check with your local authority if you want to find out what these are. By-laws authorising children and young people to work in street trading must say which days, which hours, and the places where, they may work.
Employers who want to employ children or young people under school leaving age are required to get a permit from their local authority. The permit must be signed by both the employer and one of your parents.
There are some extra rules about the employment of children under 14. If you are under 14, you are not allowed to work at all except in the following types of work:-


to take part in sport, advertising, modelling, plays, films, television or other entertainment. The employer must apply for a licence from the local authority
to do odd jobs for a parent, relative or neighbour
to do babysitting – see under heading Babysitting (http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/life/employment/young_people_and_employment.htm#babysitting).

However, children of 13 or above may be able to do some other types of work, depending on the by-laws of the local authority in their area. For example, the by-laws may say that children of 13 and above in your area can do a paper-round, or that you can do light work which is not likely to be harmful to your health, safety or development.

Alot of jobs will have a minumum of 16 if it's nothing that requires alot of experience, qualifications! But ou can get alot under that age.

Regarding Sainsburys:

All applicants must be of compulsory School Leaving Age, this is deemed in England, Wales and Northern Ireland as “a person is no longer of compulsory school age after the last Friday of June of the school year in which their sixteenth birthday occurs”. In Scotland it is defined as “a person whose sixteenth birthday falls between 1st March and 30th September is of compulsory school age up until 31st May that year. Pupils aged sixteen on or between 1st October and the last day of February are still of compulsory school age until the start of the Christmas holidays in that school year.”

Although I know several people who got a job there at the age of 15.

My school employs students part time:

2 hours every schoolday after school
5 pounds an hour
10 hours a week

In my local Sainsbury's there are a lot of 15 year olds. From what they have said they were allowed to work because they had their National Insurance card (so they were only a few months away from 16). Big companies won't employ you if you don't have an NI Number/card.

It all depnds where you are from.
Your local authroity will decide what and when you are allowed to work.

It's 14 to be able to legally work because employers can't get cover/insurance on someone below 14.

urr believe me its harder to get in at tesco that you think. You need to fill out a form with them that asks loads of questions where you have to put M for most like you or L or least like you, and some of the questions are really unfair. Takes like 30mins to get through that.

Dont know if I got in or not lol, I got accepted at the pub by me, I know TK MAXX accept you becuase they rung me up the other day offering me the job. All I did was drop off my CV to the person behind the till :P

In guernsey you can work from 14 normallay maybe 16 in some shops, yet you can get some from 13 if you know people ect ;)

you can get in at 12 :P I got paid cash in hand so nothing was ever known :)

You have to be over 13 but you cant work after 7pm and the max of somthing like 10 hours a week. Oh and you can only work 2 hours on a sunday if your under 16.
To work more hours you have to of left school and be 16.
