Introduction
Seeing that this is the Articles and Stories section, I felt like writing an article. Stumped, I thought, what is the thing that is on my mind most, And up popped video games. Yes, its very sad that such a brillant (stupid) mind spends all his day thinking about video games. But I felt that I should take a look at video games, And where they've been, and where there heading.
Note: If you have never played a video game, or ever seen one before, then this isnt for you.
8-Bit
Video games was given birth to by Nintendo, a former Card making company. Nintendo produced the first ever Video game, which started off in a arcade. It was called Donkey kong, and featured the fat plumber Mario, who would soon become the ledgendary trademark for Nintendo. The game was very basic really, three levels of you, Mario, jumping over Donkey Kong's barrels and various other attempts at stopping you from saving Princess Peach (It wasnt her name at the time). Then, after a flood of arcade games, Including the world famous Space Invaders, The Game and Watch came out. The first ever handheld console, much like a Gameboy today. The Game and Watch wasnt that much of a console really, But it was coming close to one. It used technology still used today, in those cheap Sonic games you get from Macdonalds, and other stuff aswell. Lots of games were availible, all based around one character, the poorly named Mr Game and Watch. Then in 1989, a breakthrough, the proper first ever Games console, the NES (Nintendo Entertaintment System). It had colour in most of its games, and introduced a new line of heroes, still used in games to this day. Who made these characters? None other then the world famous Shigeru Miyamoto, who gave birth to an amazing line of influential heroes, the captivated Gamers minds across the globe. A list of games were released, and suddenly, kids and teenagers, maybe some adults, across the world were begging for more. Later on in 1989, the Sega Genesis/Megadrive, was released. The mysterious Sega had only been a small company, making arcade games, but suddenly, they popped out the blue, And all havok was let loose. The Console Wars had begun.
The Console Wars
The Console Wars is a continuous battle, raging between Gamers across the world, dertimined to discover the better console. In 1992, the Sega Genesis/Megadrive 2 was released. A faster, better version. With my parents having no sense of which console to buy, they brought this one, And I was brought up with Sonic. Sonic the hedgehog VS Super Mario, is a debate still used to this day, The two rivals were often pit against each other in Internet Flash cartoons and Fan comics. Then, in 1995, Nintendo released the SNES, (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) Nintendo had lost many fans, in the delay for a new console, as Sega hogged the glory, but finally, they were back, And with new amazing games. Mario and Link returned for adventure after adventure, pleasing gamers for years.
3D
The N64 was released on June 23rd 1996 and later that year in the US, but the N64project started already in 1993 and was planned to be launched way back in 1995. The history of the Playstation began in 1988 when Sony and Nintendo were working together to develop the Super Disc. The Super Disc was going to be a CD-ROM attachment that was intended to be part of Nintendo's soon to be released Super Nintendo game. However, Sony and Nintendo parted ways business-wise and the Super Disc was never introduced or used by Nintendo. In 1991, Sony used a modified version of the Super Disk as part of their new game console - the Sony Playstation.
The Sony Playstation was released in Japan in 1994, then in England and USA in 1995. Nintendo was again made a comeback with the Nintendo 64, and the Console Wars raged on. 3D Mario was one of many highlights that are still remember by gamers to this day. Even the 3D Legend of Zelda has been voted one of the best games ever. Whilst on the other hand, PS1 released their mascot, the seductive Lara croft, a platformer that was pleasing for all. But one question was left unanswered, where was Sega?
The 128-bit Era
Sega released the Sega Dreamcast just as Nintendo and Sony released their wave of next gen consoles, meaning that the Sega Dreamcast became a flop that have scarred and almost bankrupted Sega for life. Even though it had some good games, The graphics were just too poor, and last-gen, so it was ignored, even by Sega fans. The Gamecube (Project name Dolphin) was released in Japan in 2001, and Europe 2002, another Mario game was released, but wasn't accepted aswell, but worser then that, the next Zelda game, The Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker, was argued about by many, due to Nintendo's choice of making it a cel shaded game. The Playstation 2 was released in Japan in 2000, and also provided a wide range of games. But then, another contender entered the ring, with amazing graphics and chunky controllers, The Microsoft Xbox was prepared to win. Instantly releasing Halo, gamers all over the world brought the new console, and fell in love with Halo at first sight. The Xbox was released in 2001, alongside the Gamecube.
Handhelds
Nintendo was the original king of Handhelds, releasing Gameboy after Gameboy, proving a great sucess. Sorry, but I have to mention the release of Pokemon red and blue, which sold more units then any ps2 game. ;P But recently, the NGAGE, which was shunned by gamers, tried to take on the gameboy, but failed. Then the Nintendo DS (Desginer System) arrived, the most recent of the consoles, with the remake of Super mario 64, and a touch screen and microphone, gamers cared for it like it was their baby, As I do for mine ^^ But now, the Handheld console wars are beginning, with the long awaited arrival of the Sony PSP (Playstation portable), Nintendo finally has some competition, though Sony's horrifyingly large price of 200 pounds, may put some gamers off.
The future of Gaming
The future of Gaming, is obvisouly another console war... But this time, what is there to improve? Xbox has nothing to put itself ahead of Sony and Nintendo this time around, so we'll have to wait and see. As for the contenders, they include, The Nintendo Revoloution, PS3, and the Xbox 360. All the consoles have wireless controllers and a hardrive, but my moneys on Nintendo, with the downloable games feature, Which lets you download any game ever made by Nintendo.
Thanks for reading, I know it was slightly biased, but still, thanks, hope you enjoyed.
