Well you have a choice. All depends on your budget though!
If you want something small and got a spare monitor, keyboard or mouse. Even though I recommend the Apple keyboard then get the Mac Mini. I currently own one of those and they are great machines.
Now if you want to be mobile you have two choices; MacBook or MacBook Pro, if you check the Apple site you see information depending on the models. ALTHOUGH. Apple are updating these in the next month or so.
Want a desktop machine? Comes with a screen, keyboard and mouse. iMac is the way to go. I been on these in the store and what wonderful machines.
Now, got the cash to burn and want some power and performance then the Mac Pro!

Right here we go,
For your first mac the mini is a obvious choice. Its cheap and still runs osx well. If you have all ready used mac osx before and like it then i would advise a imac. It just has that bit more umph and also is more compact with the screen built in. In your situation i would not consider mac pro because it will be probs out of your price range and to put to good use is for people who do hd video editing of big loads of multitrack recording or 3d graphics.
If you want a mac laptop well you sadly only have 2 choices. I would go the macbook and maybe go for the version with 2gb ram standared. But if you would like to do video editing on programs like final cut then maybe go for the entery level macbook pro.
Feel free to ask any more questions and i will be happy to help you.

Don't buy a Macbook or Macbook Pro until Octoberish. They might update them and redesign them in September.

The mac mini is quite good. but to me it lacks speed. I think really if you have the money its best to go for the 24" imac. Its really amazing. Luckily when i was going to buy my imac my parents found an error in there bank books from years ago and ended up getting £5000.

There is no newer version, unless you mean the 80GB model? I have the same one. Then I bought myself a nice external because I needed it for time machine etc.

I won't really suggest the Mac Mini btw because I find that you should jump straight into at least an iMac. If you really enjoy Mac, it will be money wasted as the Mac Mini is not that powerful. If you can try out at your friend's place if they have mac or play with one at an apple store, it can help :)

They might be updating them, but the thing is, I don't want the new ones, the older verions are fine.

^ If they release new ones, the old ones will go down substatially in price, especially if there is a redesign. It would be in your best interest to wait.

Anybody who says Mac Mini is slow are liars to the end. The mac mini is as fast as a normal machine in my opinion.

ye i agree and disagree on your post there. For general use its once fast little machine that runs well.
But try to do large multitrack recording or large video editing and the power is not enough. Overall for what you get in that little box for the price is bloody good.
Firewire
wireless
bluetooth
optical audio
dvd drive
dual core prosesser
up to 4gb ram
when you look at it it's worth every penny.
