RUSSIA threatened to NUKE Poland yesterday as the world faced the prospect of a terrifying new Cold War.

The chilling threat was issued by a top general of Vladimir Putin amid mounting tensions over the war in Georgia.

Gen Anatoly Nogovitsy lashed out after Poland agreed to help the US create a “missile shield” over Europe. He said: “Poland is making itself a target. Such targets are destroyed as a first priority.”

Gen Nogovitsy stressed Moscow was ready to use nuclear weapons “against allies of countries having nuclear weapons if they in some way help them”. Russia is furious Poland has said the US can put an interceptor base and a battery of Patriot missiles on its territory.

President Dmitry Medvedev, ruling under the direction of predecessor Mr Putin, said the missile defences were aimed at Russia.

He branded US claims that they are a deterrent against rogue states “a fairy tale”.

That's disgusting. I think it's unlikely it'll happen but if it did it could mark the end of the world as we know it - A nuclear war would be negatively catastrophic.

Well frankly I think they're within their rights to nuke Poland as America should keep it's nose out of Europe. When Russia went poking around the Americas (Cuba) the US sealed off Cuba and threatened nuclear action so what do they expect.

The American's and Polish have been warned, they're asking for trouble if they go ahead with their ridiculous plans. I'd like to think the US are our allies but history comes into play and the American's shouldn't have missiles there. If Poland wants to go ahead and get all it's people killed it's going the right way about it.

In one respect, I can see why Russia are annoyed. The US don't need to touch Europe, Europe is perfectly fine without them. But I can also respect why America have these bizarre plans, because Russia is kinda proving it's a vicious country threatening to nuke 1 country with about 99% of the population who are innocent citizens (maybe more).

If a nuke did hit Poland, would we hear it in England or would it affect us?Well in the Chernobyl disaster (Russian nuclear power station on the Ukraine border went wrong and blew up killing a village and making near-by areas inhabitable for years) it actually killed a lot of sheep in Wales despite it happening in Russia/Ukraine. I imagine we might hear it but it shouldn't affect Human's, it's unlikely this'll happen anyway. It's probably a empty threat or the Polish won't go ahead.

Just as long as we stay out of it, but I imagine we'd end up being a base for US Troops should war break out in Europe, that would then involve us in the war but the government has been reasonably quite on the Georgia crisis, Gordon Brown doesn't look as hungry for war or as up the American's as Tony Blair was, the French now seem to be playing this role so we could stay neutral should any conflict happen but it's still unlikely.

Poland are in NATO though (Thus them getting the missile barrier) so it would probably be a NATO war involving us actually come to think of it, it's likely the Iranian troops would ambush us in Iraq too as Iran is a strong alley of Russia.

I think Russia will bomb some place, not nuclear.
If Russia bomb a place, then America sticks it's nose in, then China will back up Russia, eventually leading to Irans open to attack Isreal.

Once Iran have attacked Isreal, USA will HAVE to protect Isreal because of a written deal.
Once thats happened, America will be fighting two wars, eventually leading UK into it to help them.

Remember only 1 nuclear bomb has been dropped and thats by america on Japan,
that killed everyone in that area for years and was unpopulated, imaging an approaching nuclear war?
The whole world will be unpopulated.

Today though, Russia signed the Peace deal between Russia and Georgia, although Russias forces are still in Georgia.

Just another quick note, the reason why Russia want to bomb Poland is because USA have signed a deal to build a missle base on the borer of poland.
Although this missle base is pointing directly to Iran, Russia thinks it is pointing at them.
Poland has said that Russia can see the base when it's complete. Hopefully this will end the stress put on people.

Within that missle base, America hope to intercept Iran missles that are heading for Isreal.
Iran WILL attack isreal in 2008/2009. Bringing in America.

The only way russia will actually do anything, is if someone else makes the first move (eg. The missile defense in poland). We'll most likely end up having a cold war, just waiting for someone else to make the first move, or untill russia get too pissed off and just go for it.

I mean, what do you have to gain from an all out world war in todays modern society

In terms of the nuclear missile harming us, not likely, as we're 900 miles away from poland.

But I doubt any country would stand for that, so we would probably get dragged into a war and retaliate against russia, making us a lovely little target

But if hardly any countries would stand for it, the world would go against Russia. So if we all nuked Russia, would they have time to nuke places like London and New York for example?

Knowing Russia, they probably have an early warning system in place, so if they wanted, they could send the missiles before the ones we sent hit.
BUt we have missile defenses in place too, so they should protect us

Which is a reason why Russia probably wouldn't send a nuke. I think the governments around the world still have enough, i don't know how else to put it, 'respect' for the world and wouldn't risk starting WW3.

If Russia did nuke Poland (Very small chance) I imagine NATO (Most of Europe, US and Canada) would retaliate but not with a nuclear bomb, and if they did I don't see a nuclear war. I imagine they'd just send the one nuke to a Russian city and they'd surrender.

I think China would stay out of it, they're a communist country and they risk trading relations with anyone if they join any wars, they're sort of friends with everyone and are very much wrapped up in their own matters. They'd only get involved if someone attacked them which they won't.

I saw somewhere on TV that if a nuclear war ever started, Australia would be the safest place to go! I hope to move there when I'm older so I should be relatively safe :)
