As far as I know, more energy efficient and you get more for your money (the Core 2 DUO range that is).
If you're going for a lower spec machine and looking to choose between an Intel Pentium D and an AMD Athlon 64 X2 then the AMD is the one to choose.
i would say intel, i got a 3.4ghz for £15

I've seen 3.2s. I'll check now.
There is a 3.33 GHz, 3.46 GHz, and 3.6GHz according to Wiki.
Edit: some on the Intel site as well. No 3.4s though :(. http://compare.intel.com/pcc/default.aspx?familyID=3

I'm an amd fan and always will be. But theres nothing wrong with intel//
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ would work for what you want quitte well.
as would any core2duo i'm sure
