View Full Version : Youmeo BETA Launch

Hi Guys (and girls!),

I was just preparing for the BETA test of our new site and I just remembered about this forum and the many people who had used youmeo and were discussing youmeo.

We're launching a BETA tomorrow that i'll be granting access to for individuals and would love to hear what some of you think of the new site, its functionality and features.

As previously mentioned in another post by me the initial aim for youmeo and general business plan is to become a Social and Mobile Network Aggregator. This basically means (for those that do not understand) we'll be a network that allows you to control, update and edit your other social networks within our site whilst using the network for your own benefit too.

The new site incorporates features that allow you to update statuses cross network, have multiple profiles (with permission granted access), post blogs cross network and much more.

Just to wrap this up, i'm the site Project Manager (as I think I may of mentioned) and would appreciate any help you guys could provide. As you know, Social Networks work around what their customers want, need and love. Networks are controlled by the user and since user loyalty is so low within the market we obviously welcome all comments, criticisms and appraisals given otherwise we would become stale, unusuable and gain a bad reputation within the community. Given that there's no better place to gain BETA testers that are internet savvy, used to forums and networking platforms... I thought I would invite you in on the BETA action!

So, if any of you would like to BETA Test the new site then please do drop me a PM and i'll give you some details on how to go about becoming a BETA Tester for us.

Any questions, please ask :-)

What you guys don't realise, is that youmeo aren't a company run by some ex habbo player who thinks they can create a social network with 2 people in their bedrooms. They are serious, and have offices and team of staff. I don't see why everyone gets so worked up about it on here. Give them a break, it's prefectly possible that they will become popuar.

I agree. People on here go It will fail its a fail ect. They have 400,000 members for god sake. When your sites can even match half that then you can start to say stuff like that. So far on this forum nobody has got close to that.

Its kept open has it not ? for this forum its usually closed and off the net is 2 months with most projects on here.

Protege i cant seehow you can say there design is ****. I have just looked at your splash page on your site and it is less than perfect. Before you go saying someone elses is a fail and design sucks at least make sure yours is ok.

Quite right, people haven't realised our site actually has higher user numbers and activity than HabboxForum but no one calls HxF a failure? Not saying we're better than HxF in anyway as it's two different web sections, just using it as an example of smaller numbers still being successful.

Dentafrice
21-08-2008, 04:05 PM
The thing is, those users we generated over the years that pplparty was active, and I'm pretty sure you don't have 400,000 active members (logged in in the past.. say, two months?)

You may have 400,000 users in your database, but if they registered and then never logged in again.. that's not really accurate.

Klydo
21-08-2008, 04:08 PM
We actually have a reasonably high activity rate with our users considering our site's usability was terrible. Also our highest and fastest gain in user numbers was after the rename from PPLParty to Youmeo, so in the past 4 months we've had our highest climb in user numbers to date.

Dentafrice
21-08-2008, 04:09 PM
Yeah, but still.. you may have 400,000 users, but I'm wondering out how that number.. how many are not one-time visitors, and are active users.

InterStudios splash page doesn't look good, cause Im not the designer of InterStudios, though I designed that I do not class myself as a designer though I can produce work to a decent standard.

Look here (http://interstudios.co.uk/thefuture.png) and Here (http://interstudios.co.uk/omgPreviewz.png)

And to be honest Interstudios splash page isn't at all our worries at the moment but for a site like YouMeo with that amount of 'users', the design looks shockingly ****.

Its not just me who thinks its ****.

To be frankly honest, I'm tired of seeing this flaming towards Youmeo. 2 months or so ago we actually had something to moan at, the useability and security - so they decided to re-build it to fix those issues.

Now they have fixed those issues people still moan, I still stand by the point that Greg and other staff can be annoying but so are most members of this forum...

I want them to make something out of it, as it would be a waste of good investment - remember investors aren't stupid so the chances are they knew they would eventually get a good return.

Don't get me wrong, I still hate some aspects about it but I'm not going to make my mind up until I have used the beta/ new system. Good luck to 'em.

Protege
21-08-2008, 04:24 PM
I agree with source on the investment points but I dont agree on why they have to come on here to ask for beta viewers? They have 400,000 'members' why not send random invites to them? wouldn't that be better oh ****, only 100 are active.

Thank you Matt, people need to realise this thread is about the BETA which has an entirely new design and system. So why focus on the old one when we've entirely changed it and are giving you the opportunity to test it out.

@Protege: As we thought it would be good to have people who are generally interested in BETA testing, not just random users we currently have. They aren't interested in helping test the site and find bugs they are just there to use it.

But they're the people who use the site and all the functions on it... could of just splashed on your site "Try Beta", like eBay do, Microsoft do - seems to work for them and basically just switches them over, they can report bugs like they usually do etc.

Would also be nice for some mac widgets? Maybe to update your profile via the widget etc, not sure if anyone on your team can code applescript though? I agree with Source, the flaming that has been done over the past few months should be forgot now. They took our abuse and criticism on board and have created a brand news system and new design - why flame it if you can't appreciate/see it?

I for one look forward to testing the new site as I'm sure it will be at a good enough standard for people to stay active. Hopefully the security will be much improved with the knowledge of nicks coding and updates regularly.

I like the site - but there is room for improvement.

Forexample:

Every profile hasa boring blank look - why not add a Edit profile system?

Also, i joined and put my DOB as a 13yr old, but on the profile, 16 years old?

Haha, yes they seem to but I guess with the launch of everything they need it! It appears that callum, adam, greg, nick are the main staff and get everything sorted, the rest are there for marketing and advertising I think/support.

GoldenMerc, why would we shut when our website offers something Facebook, MySpace and Bebo don't? Not only that but the website has actually had a lot of success and it's only going to get more over the coming months with new site relaunch.

We also need more staff than we currently have, as we have too much work to try and do between Nick and myself.

Also if something involves Youmeo and the internet I'll pretty much be there. That's why I was on HxF as this thread exists. What do you want me to do? Completely ignore the thread and ignore any questions people have been PMing me.

@tamudo - Sorry but I personally don't know, I don't think anyone does at the moment as we don't really measure it.

Dentafrice
25-08-2008, 11:32 PM
It would be a good idea to set a 'last login' date, so you can measure the activity between the last say.. 30 days? Which is plenty enough to determine your active users.

Thats my point, its generally a good idea. Not when that hacker has hacked you before, he/she then becomes untrusted as it is not needed. If there was a security issue which there obviously was there is no need to exploit it but just send it to an member of staff who will actually deal with it.

Oh, and for anyone who says they don't deal with the problems you haven't seen the issues that were on the beta site, all dealt with within 10 minutes or less ;P

Lol, yeah the issue with the old site was it was so complicated to fix. It's coding was really confusing to follow, even Nick had trouble from time to time. This time around even I can go in and fix the code as it's been made really clean and simple. So any bugs that do occur any of the development team can go straight to the file and sort it out.

It will be nice to hear all your thoughts about the site once it launches.

Dentafrice

We all wonder why, why oh why oh why.

;P

He did originally I think.

No.. not necessarily.. yeah, there were tons of bugs, there were tons of exploits.

From what Nick told me, and from what I've heard, the coding was god-awful.. and that's fine.. because it has improved now.

The exploit on the old site was just so obvious, it appeared by just typing "it's" into a profile field, which broke the SQL query.

So in turn, when the system updated the database, it looked like this.

UPDATE `table` SET `field`='$field' WHERE `bla`='$id'

Now that isn't the correct names, or structure of the query, but here's how it would look normally:

UPDATE `table` SET `bio`='hey there I am Caleb' WHERE `id`='1'

Now when I typed it's, it looked like this.

UPDATE `table` SET `bio`='hey there I am Caleb. It's' WHERE `id`='1'

As you can see, when I typed the ', it broke the SQL statement, allowing me to insert arbitrary SQL. So all I had to do was this:

UPDATE `table` SET `bio`='heyder' WHERE id='1'--' WHERE `id`='1'

The -- is a comment, which cancels out the rest of the statement.

Thankfully this is fixed :)
