View Full Version : Shall I look ahead to being a Fireman?
My family is rooting for me to become a Fireman, I know you need a good PE which Im set 1 but sets determine nothing, untill you take the bleep test which In Year 10 I got about 10.9 which was very good considering my friend did get 11.2 I came 3rd.
Anyone know what you need to become a fireman, and do you think its a good future to look ahead off?

Do you actually have to take PE tho? Cos id be screwed :S
I think its as long as your fit and completely healthy etc.
Look at the firemen of today; half of them obese with mustaches

To be a policeman you only need like 5.2 or somthing ridiculus like that. Might be higher for a firefighter because of you needing to be fitter due to going through smoke etc.. But good luck if you choose to go down that path.

That bleep test score is great considering you need 11 to be a referee and all they do is run up and down continuousley.
If you need to know what to do then ask your careers advisor?

Good luck with your path of career, remember its your own choice, how much your family & friends advice can help, you shouldn't always listen as this is a force push, you want a push what can lead you into a satisfying job, if you want to become a fire-fighter, got right ahead, it would be an honour to have met you!

Don't join the force unless you want to, its not the kind of career to just drop out of aftera month of realising you don't like it. You need to think about it alot, be able to get up and any hour of the night and go straight into action.

Na, you don't actually need it, you need need to be generally healthy and stand out when you apply and do the training course if you do it. You may not get in first time but keep trying :) Go to your local firestation and ask for a look around, they'll explain anything you need to know. I'ts a relativley easy job earning around £25k per year and you only work half the year, but 90% of the time you're just putting up smoke alarms.
Obviously, I could die being a fireman but thats a risk I would to take to save others and putting my life on the line doing something, to protect that person.
Obviously I don't want to die young, but if I did die I would like to die in honour :}

Only 4 have died in recent years and with all the safety, training and equipment it takes a big mistake for others to die too.
My stepdad's a fireman and the great percentage of the time he doesn't even go out to fires. Basically, you need to be fit and healthy and able to do drills. Perfect eyesight isn't a necessity in some forces - in Warwickshire it isn't but West Midlands it is. I think you just need GCSEs for it too, as they'll provide all additional training.
Unfortunately, it's a very popular career choice and 'cause of equal opportunities it's hard to get picked - unless you're gay, asian or a woman.
lol, I would fail at being a fireman xD
I'm too lazy.

YAY!
I asked my connections lady about this, and all you need is basic maths english and science. They will teach you what you dont already know.
And if i was you, (i want to be a fireman too) I would start thinking about another part time job( Chippy, Electrical guy, That sort of trade) as most fire services are 4 days on, 4 days off. Not sure about your local one though.
:)
Edit: Aboveeeeee Its 25-30k How is that not good? :P But you cant start training until your 18, so college or another job would be handy

I used to want to be a fireman andi found out you need to be fit and healthy, good vision and maths. Why not go to your local firestation place thingy and ask them about what you need. :P

I don't know much about firemen, sorry. but I was shocked at the 5.5 or something on the bleep test you have to be. That's ridiculous!
I got 8.8 in the bleep test I'm 14 and I don't do regular exersize LOL.

Now, i'm not the fittest person around infact I hardly ever did P.E. but when I did the bleep test I got 9.6 so surely 10.9 isn't that good.
I think the best in our year was 18 something?
But yeh you don't exactly need to be fit to be a firemen it just helps alot.

Like a police officer, you don't need any formal qualifications to become a fireman, just have to meet the physical and basic intelligence requirements.
Don't forget that most firefighters have jobs aside from firefighting.
You should go ahead with it. Firemen are awesome! :P
