Virtual PC

Hi, I was going to buy another laptop and use it as a test machine for files to see if they really were viruses. However I've been looking around for an alternative and I bumped into Virtual PC, by Microsoft.

I was wondering, can I setup Virtual PC on my laptop and use it to test files to see if they are viruses, without my main laptop getting infected?
