A blackhole is a singularity, anything sucked in is destroyed. Its gravity sucks you in and you get crushed to death.

I don't think the world is going to end, but there is no proof that it isn't. No one has ever fired particles at each other this fast before so no one will know what will happen. A few hundred years ago scientists thought that if something was lighter than air it couldn't fly, but now there are planes that weigh 17 tons. So you can't really say "No. Its not going to happen".

But the gravitational pull is so strong you wouldn't even know it was happening.

You can, because science has proven that nothing disastrous is going to come from the LHC. In this world of health and safety gone mad, if there was a genuine chance at destruction, the project would have been abandoned. Numerous colliders have been active over the years, and in a couple of decades time, an even larger hadron collider will be in use. Those saying "the world is going to end" are the sensationalistic media, because more often then not, the truth does not sell a good story.

of course it wont. i hope. there is a 1:5000000000 chance, that means that if there are 5000000000 planets and an LHC was on all 5000000000, only one will blow up. So, to prove that worlds will blow up with this we'll need 5000000000 planets and about €100 billion (in € because it is in Switzerland, so it is approx. £80127003828.47). So, no.

It was on the news last night i'm sure it's 1 in so many million chance of even a mini black hole being created (never mind the earth being destroyed) we did about this a while ago in physics. They are just firing protons at near the speed of light in a 27KM tube then is cooled down to -271 degrees (1.9 degrees from absolute 0) then when they hit each other they take loads of pictures and then analyse it. The scientists say that mini black holes could be create but they will be the size of a proton and last a billionth of a nano second as they will just eat themselves oh and they are doing it to find out more about how our universe was made and to find the forumla of everything (why there is more Matter then Anti-matter) It's all very confusing and most of it is pointless but it is thought they can use it in the future to create energy (simulating two hydrogens atoms fusing together to create a helium one which releases enerygy, it's what happens on the sun)
Little science lesson for you there. And if you really wanna learn about the destruction of the earth just search "21 December 2012" lol it's the creatism religion that belive the world will end that day because earth passes Planet X or summet and on that day an alien aircraft will fly over space and all the people who die will go flying up into in or summet loony like that :P
personally I think this could be a scientific breakthrough, I'm not 'scientifically minded' nor do I have a huge interest in science, but if this works it'll be great. It will also make all the religions fall apart ;)

Imagine if one person survives. Just one.
How long you think they'll go before killing themselves?
However it hasn't been proven.
Since the effect of gravity increases as you are closer to the centre and decreases as you are further away, he massive gravity of a black hole means that even as short of a distance from your feet to your head means a big enough difference in the effect of gravity to pull whichever part of you is closest faster than the parts of you further away hence stretching you. It is proven as the effect of gravity on earth at the top of Everest is minutely less than at sea level.

How long you think they'll go before killing themselves?

pretty much, if they wanted to create the big bang, something needs to have no mass, everything on earth has gravity so therefore it will have mass. As things get faster they become heavier, so if they put a lot of these in at speeds nearing light, it'll just become heavier and heavier, and could possibly knock earth out of its orbit. Let alone the fact that the atoms will cause so much energy when they collide that the subatomic particals will be far to filled with energy to accuratly note down all millions of times they collide.
so really, it's going to be a really long attempt to find out if sub atomic atoms exist.
but i havent read anything about it that much tbh,
just thats what i reckon will happen idk. x
we wont die though cause there'l be millions of blackholes, but theyll destroy themselves like as they're being made. we're more likely to die from the energy disruption of the atoms hitting each other tbh

Lol at the people thinking the world is going to end. Do you really think they would let them conduct this experiment if there was a high chance of that? No.
Don't you reckon it would be headline news if it was?
The chances of it actually causing a black hole are very low, and the experiment they are conducting happens naturally on Earth everyday. Thats what people don't understand and thats what the news don't tell you, just so you will be scared, especially kids.

Its not the fact that the media twist everything, its more to do with the fact that there will be black holes created inside the machine and when you hear this, if you dont understand it you would automatically think wont that be a threat. People who think this way just have to consider the LHC took 30 years to build, 1 person died for it and it is basically the worlds first time machine if you will, Im sure the greatest minds in the world havent got it wrong.
Oh, what a suprise, nothing went wrong. :O

Even if anything does go wrong which it wont, the size of the holes created means the world couldnt possible "end" for years and years.

Yes because the news is the root to all information :p They didnt do a good job in the run up to LHC, as noone knew about it even though its been around 30 years and cost 5 billion pounds. I personally believe nothing has went wrong, and dont forget it will be on for perhaps days now, its only doing one test and I would assume they havent waited 30 years to keep it on for 40 odd minutes to do one beam session :)

No there was smaller machines that were used before, this is the worlds largest so far and after this testing session is over in probably about a year or two, they plan to extend the LHC to make it even bigger, only if this one goes according to plan.

This thread only shows up how little most of you know about the project.
The fact you have a link to The Sun shows a lot already. Tabloids don't know the full story and exaggerate to get you to buy their paper. Whoever made a post earlier on in the thread saying "it isn't the fact that media twists things", I think you'll find it is.
You guys above, your crap about it being cold is complete crap. The testing started today at 8.30 and to start the test, the machine has had to be cooled to -250+ centrigrade. That shows how the weather won't affect anything. Also, the whole thing's underground so the weather up top doesn't really relate to down below.
Secondly, it is not today that we, as loads of you like to put it, "might die". Today is the start of the testing stages. The actual 'bang' will happen in October.
I've only read what - the first post and few posts on this page and so I don't know what's already been discussed and so if someone's already mentioned what not then fine.
The whole point of the experiment is to find out what the point of 'mass' is. They have a theory and if a particle of which has a name that I've forgotten is formed after the 'bang' in October, then they will know why we have mass.
Some of you have mentioned that if black holes have been created, it would be all over the news. If a black hole was formed, it would sink to the centre of the earth because it's so dense, if it survived. If a black hole was made, it'd probably go within less than a millisecond anyway.
CERN are the same people that made the World Wide Web and have done loads of other things. I think you'll find they know what they're doing, but most of the world doesn't. This isn't the first machine that does something like this, just the largest.
So please, don't read the crap from the papers.

This is boring. The only plausible reason I can see for you creating this thread is to get some attention or alot of replies or something strange. The chance of a black hole being created is less than 1% and even then it will be so small that it will just fizzle out. (That information comes from Stephen Hawkings speech on the LHC) where he bet $100 there wouldnt even be a black hole created (He is the world's leading black hole expert)

How? Dont you read anything about this actual experiment? They dont have now nor will never have in our lifetime, enough energy to make a blackhole able to destroy the world. The only other way anything could go wrong and people die is if the Hydrogen canisters blow up that send protons round and then whoever is in the vicinity will die, not the world.

Alright. Listen.
The LHC replicates the big bang theory and the possibility of a black hole is minute. Now, a black hole is created from the collapse of an object within itself, causing the gravity of it's field to become the strength.
So for example, if a star collapsed in on itself it would be one big black hole... but we're talking about particles, the black hole would die out in seconds after it's created.
Secondly, the LHC doesn't even START for another month, it's only being turned on today for all of you who's predicting death today.
Hawkings has founded more into the concept of special relavity, and the concept of black holes than anyone practically. He finds the machine as a god send, and he's right. It's vital for the concept of the human race, a strong and unbelievable renewable energy source can be created by this, which will help Hawkings own prediction that we only have close to 1000 years left in relation to this, as he stated in an interview a few years back.
FURTHERMORE, this isn't the first to be built. There have been 8 made BEFORE this that ran for decades, hell one is even running right this very minute. These are completely safe and you're more likely to die by me coming round to your house with a knife than the machine.
Get over it.
If some of you had actually read the reports, according to the scientists working on the LHC, there has been a lot of (I cannot find the link for the report, it was posted somewhere in here) LHC-like experiments done over the years they started building it, by nature alone, and we're still here..
Also, in reply to the user above, here is a link to a Collider that has been operational since 2000, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relativistic_Heavy_Ion_Collider

Get over it.
tbh, everything you said here I said a page or two ago :D
And it isn't exactly replicating the big bang theory because it's not what they're primarily looking for.

No offence to you, but you don't exactly help by not explaining ANYTHING AT ALL. If your going to do that, then at least show you know more about it.
Stop being stupid, either on purpose or you cant understand plain english.
THE LARGE HADRON COLLIDER IS NOT POWERFUL ENOUGH TO DOOM HUMANITY.
Read and repeat as many times as necessary until you understand.

We don't actually know that until they crash the protons though, that's why they're saying it COULD produce a blackhole that doesn't decay by hawking radiation.

Prof. McAlpine that helped to turn it on stated that not until a larger LHC comes into existence will they be able to create a black hole large enough to engulf the entire world, supposing they could be wrong then whats anyone going to do but Id give that the greatest minds in all of humanity (for thats what they are) havent got it wrong.
We're all going to die.
I hope your in the way of a rather large pitbull :)

Why is this? I'm only stating a fact.

An opinion, not a fact, you cannot backup your statement..

This is boring. The only plausible reason I can see for you creating this thread is to get some attention or alot of replies or something strange. The chance of a black hole being created is less than 1% and even then it will be so small that it will just fizzle out.l
no, there is a very likely chance that it will create black holes, but theres a one in 60 billion chance that one wont collapse in on itself and actually do some damage.
An opinion, not a fact, you cannot backup your statement..
failed. he never said that we're all gunna die because of the LHC, he just stated that we're all gunna die.

It is a true statement, otherwise know as a fact.

Well at least someone realised.

That isn't fact, all the news sources are claiming different odds.

MY TEXT R BETTER
WE ARE NOT GOING TO DIE
Thanks, and if something DOES go wrong, i'll have had my birthday at least AND we can laugh at the french seconds before everyone else dies! WHOO

Itis impossible for LHC from CERN To kill us because sure they may be shooting protons at the speed of light at each other after about 40 mins/ To add it on they have been doing this for 20 years in the making so im sure itll be safe but they may be making another universe (miniture) btu they can shut it down fromt he amount of computers they have. they have around 40 super computers over 2k sicentist work on it from around 60 diff contries. No doubt thell have steven hawkins but they can controll this so if there is any black holes thell only take energy and light from the miniture universe.

You obviously don't understand, you can't "take away" the light and energy from it, it would simply destroy the casing it's in and continue sucking in everything from there. Nothing can escape a black hole.
Also there's been no proof black holes actually exist anyway.

There's lots of proof that black holes exist, just no proof that these mini black holes exist. Either they don't exist, or if they do, they quickly decay into the types of particles that made them.

They're not making another universe, they're trying to recreate the conditions of the universe that were present just a fraction of a second after the big bang

Otherwise known as the Higgs Boson (God's Particle).
Don't you just wish people would read the reports before stating their conclusions?
