Hey,

I think this would be a great idea. I came to the situation today where a user pointed out a design issue on my website and so I wanted to +REP them for pointing this out to me. But then you have to go searching the forums for a users post, wouldn't it be much easier to be able to +REP a PM :)

Not a bad idea but is this actually possible?

Nice idea, but I'm not sure if this is possible? I also would reccommend a "Report this PM" button.

Good idea, i see no reason why this shoudn't be implemented tbh :)

doubt it'd go into place because of pointless repping
whoever sorts out rep would need the right to go through pms, which would cause an uproar.

Good thought, this means that the REP remover would have to view the private message if its a -REP. They wouldn't be "Private" messages anymore!

exxxxxxxactly, people would hate that
as far as i'm aware no one has the right to go through pms on the forum unless they have reason to.
but it can be done through databases or some **** which i dont understand
i'm not sure

Hey,

But if you were to only allow +REP on PM's :)

That's a good reason why not to have it.

Also, you don't have to go searching the forums for the users post. Just click their name in the PM, click "Find more posts by ____" then give rep to the first post you find.

Hey,

But if you were to only allow +REP on PM's :)
would lead to pointless rep, which rep editors w.e still look out for and read posts - therefore need to read pms.

Thank you :) lol.

I'm with Ben, Plank and Hayd on this one. I personally wouldn't like anyone going down my private messages.

It might be possible if joshuar edited the skins pm template.

Im 90 percent sure that some administrators have the ability to read everyones PMs anyway. How else could they infract for something done via PM as they wouldnt have proper proof.

Obviously, but I don't think any AGM would go down people's PMs for the fun of it, only for a reason. Obviously, removing rep is a reason but you may get -repped on a personal/important pm for no reason and thus means Nick- would have to go through that PM which is personal.

If that makes any sense :P

Reading of PM's is resticted to a certain few evan amongs the administrators in any case. I think if this was implemented it would create more hassle and pointess reputation spreaded. How often do you need to give reby PM anyway, and if it's possible at all.

This wouldn't be any good, it's not fair cause only 1 person could rep a PM. Dunno if this is possible anyway, but I wouldn't like this feature.

That's quite a good idea! But as people have pointed out, you'll have to prove it's not pointless. Although you can't really say "this PM rep is pointless" unless you wanted to PM the moderator/admin the PM you received. Then again, maybe that's all you need? Pointless +reps don't seem to be touched as much as pointless -reps so it could work. But that's if it is possible. None the less, good idea :)

Not a good idea, at all. People abuse the reputation system enough and thats fully public, everyone can see the posts. Private messaging would only invoke a mass abuse spree of the system, it'd be dreadful. If you want to +rep someone for a good PM, you find their latest post and +rep it. Pretty simple if you ask me, and it doesn't require a hell of a lot of slavering by the admin team.

I don't think +rep through PM's is even possible, unless vBulletin created it themselves. :S
