View Full Version : World due to end on September 10th (TRUE STORY)

SCIENTISTS are trying to stop the most powerful experiment ever – saying the black holes it will create could destroy the world.

Dubbed by some the Doomsday test, it will be carried out next week in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), located 300ft underground near the French-Swiss border.

The machine is 17 miles long and cost £4.4billion to create.

When its switch is pulled on September 10, this atom-smasher will become a virtual time machine, revealing what happened when the universe came into existence 14 billion years ago.

New particles of matter are expected to be discovered, new dimensions found beyond the four known, as scientists re-create conditions in the first BILLIONTHS of a second after the Big Bang.

Experts even predict that millions of tiny black holes will be produced — baby brothers of the monsters gobbling up dust and stars at the heart of the galaxies.
Secrets

That is why boffins are now trying to stop the project with a last-ditch challenge in the courts.

They fear the LHC experimenters are tinkering with the unknown and putting mankind — and our whole planet — at risk.

The group responsible for the experiment, the European Nuclear Research Centre (CERN), says that these mini black holes will vanish as quickly as they are created.

But the anti-CERN brigade accuse the scientists of playing God, warning that no one can guarantee that the black holes will not survive, rapidly growing in size to suck the Earth out of existence in an instant.

But CERN, which includes several UK scientists, say their work is vital to unlock the secrets of matter that forms everything known in the universe.

In the experiment, atomic particles will be fired in opposite directions along the 17-mile long underground ring — the length of the Circle Line on the London Underground.

They will travel so fast that they make 11,245 trips around the tunnel every SECOND.

From the collisions, boffins expect to discover a fundamental bit of the atom, called the Higgs boson, that is expected to exist but which has never been seen.

Professor Otto Rossler, from the Eberhard Karls University of Tubingen in Germany, is one of the scientists mounting the legal challenge at the European Court of Human Rights against 20 countries which are funding the project.

He said: “It is quite plausible that these little black holes will survive and will grow and eat the planet from the inside out.”

A CERN spokesman said: “It will not be producing anything that does not already happen routinely in nature.”

This might create 9/11 all over again,
It will take 1 day to create a fully grown black hole from
the small one the scientists are making.
And they are testing it on 9/10.

Not a single one of you has any idea of what you're talking about, it is impossible to say whether or not any black holes that appear will stay or vanish, it has NEVER been done before, no one knows what will happen, especially anyone here, as far as I'm concerned they're doing something incredibly stupid, we don't know what will happen but what they are doing can and probably will form black holes, that is putting the entire planet at risk
If you want to force yourself to believing everything will be fine go right ahead but you can't sit and say "nothing will happen!" when it's impossible to tell what will happen until it happens

Realistically, if it wipes out the world.. you won't even know as you'll be dead. Get overrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr it. The people working on it have said things like the natural environment has done something like hundred thousands of these 'experiments' this is just the first time it's ever been controlled.. I was a bit wary when I first heard about it (in like June or something..) but now I just couldn't care less.

No point in worrying about it. Chances are nothing will happen :)

I've been following this outside the forum for months on the news and the various sites and the LHC has had the worlds greatest scientists working on it with each part being tested. It's likely to create small black holes but the chances of them not destroying themselves is extremely high. If the scientists weren't as sure as they can be then it wouldn't go ahead. Anyway if I were a scientist knowing nothing or knowing about the "Higgs" or how matter can become larger and larger with only a minute chance of catastrophe I would take it.

They dont even know 100% that the universe was created by the big bang, its just best guess. So this experiment is just best guess.

So they can't be 100% sure this will work, and they can't be 100% sure this machine will work.

But I personally think the public should have a say in this experiment.

No it will not end wednesday. The top experts who beleve it could go wrong have even said if it was to create a black hole it'd be so small it'd take up to five years for us to notice anything is wrong. At this time Earthquakes, tidlewaves and volcanic euruptions would begin to sprout throughout the whole world makeing our planet inpossible to live on. Within another year the earth would have no life left on it and it would soon be swallowed up by this tiny black hole..

all of that of course I don't agree with

No! They are NOT doing the experiment on the 10th! All they are doing is sending a beam in the LHC to test every part of the structure to see if everything is okay! Thus the reason they did separate beam injections in August (8-11th) to check if those sections were okay, I seemingly remember people panicking then, not reading up on the whole subject and just listening to other bickering idiots that started all this controversy over it..
They collide the protons on the 21st October 2008. Read up before you decide to post next time..

No that's strangelets, they're quite different though I guess they still suck up stuff, a black hole would take 4 million years to get to the size of nom-nom time - it'd have to be bigger than the sun to start sucking stuff in, (which theoratically is impossible as it evaporates as soon as it appears, or it flies off into space into another galaxy.)
