Right so theres been a lot of coverage on these sorts of products in many magazines and body builders recommend them. Really all they are is just pure calories. Take someone who is trying to lose weight and gain muscle, they're just not going to lose the weight or they will have to increase their cardio workout by double just to burn off a few calories each day. We as humans consume over 50 grams of protein on a daily basis which feeds our muscles and allows them to get bigger and stronger.

Sure, if you're looking to add some extra calories to your diet and add some more protein to GAIN weight - I recommend you go buy a tub of maximum Weigh or just eat until your hearts content.

I'm sure a lot of inexperienced builders will disagree with me on this matter but it's down to preference. the only reason bodybuilders drink lots and lots of protein shakes is to keep them afloat, you mainly see them drinking these in big doses 5-6 months before Mr.Olympia occurs, this is because they are usually taking cocaine to stop them being hungry so they burn fat and look ripped - thats all.

All in all if you really want to get protein without the rapid consumption of hundreds of calories I'd recommend some lean protein such as meat, this is great for building muscle and gaining strength. Other ways of getting extra protein is by eating peanuts, they are full of protein and are very low in calories.

Just some information on your quest to build muscle and burn fat there, hope it helps!

If anybody has anything to add here feel free to do so :) Happy building.

They DO take cocaine as cocaine is known to stop you feeling hungry so you don't eat, they use protein shakes to keep them going (calories)

Yeah but they tes your for drugs and such, also cocaine can really mess you up, also if they don't want to feel hungry they could just smoke cigs?

All nuts contain protein, especially red skinned nuts. :P Salted nuts are a no no though. When I work out I usually have a protein shake after it. I only put like, a spoon full of whey protein in some milk in a plastic drinks bottle and shake it and drink it.

Even if they don't get tested, they can become addicited and loss everything they'e worked for... so why would they risk it, also why do they need protein shakes if they use steroids ?

Protein shakes are pure calories, steroids inflate the muscle tissue = two different things. They use the protein shakes to keep themselves able to maintain a standardized living leading up to Mr.Olympia, they have to look lean and cut - this is what they're judged on.

Yeah alot of big bodybuilders are known/rumored to be taking heavy ammounts of cocaine. This is because they want a VERY LOW FAT DIET.

A diet which would be seriosly unhealthy and somewhat dangerous. They do this for an exteremly low body fat %. An average body builder would be looking at around 3-6% body fat and the average is around 10%.

The protein shakes would be for the protein and the energy, but protein is still vital for body growth and repair, they can't rely just on steroids :P

But yes, sadly if you want to become known as a big bodybuilder there is alot of risks and drugs you need to take in order to reach the "perfect size"

Any other ideas about bulking up? I wanna gain a bit of weight, but not turn fat of course :P

It's hard to gain weight when you have such a fast metabolism :( Weights don't really do that much for me, perhaps I'm not getting enough protein though.

You can slow your metabolism by gaining weight as in fat.

ok pal what you just said was the biggest pile of **** i have ever heard. wanna argue this with me i am a qualified fitness instructor and advise people of nutrition and protein day in day out. Protein is used to repair muscles because when you work out your muscles tear so when you rest your body frantically searches for protein to repair the muscles. the best time to drink a protein shake is within 30 minutes of your workout as this is when your body craves protein the most, because it is in a liquid form it is assorbed by the body faster. Not all protein is designed to make people big and bulky. you can get diet protein which can be classed as mean replacements. why would you need a meal replacement? because the best diet you can have is eating 5 - 6 small portion meals a day as this keeps your metabolism high. As you will not want to make 5 - 6 meals a day you can take 1 - 3 servings of a protein shake to count as a meal as it is full of high quality nutrients and protein to help the muscles repair.

i could chat on all day about this sort of stuff but you need to stop giving people advice when you clearly have no idea what you are talking about!

Your body needs 15g of protein per day, any more you crap out on the toilet. Don't believe me? ask a doctor. What does this mean? It means if you take in any more protein your body won't use it but just store the calories. Get off your high horse because you know pretty much nothing.

Actually your both pretty much wrong.

Different peoples bodies will have a different demand on certain food groups,

I have no idea where you got 15g from, but If you don't do much excersise and dont put much stress on your muscle groups then 15g would
be a sufficient ammount. Your body needs a certain amount of protein to build muscle and repair tissue damage. For example, me because I'm at the gym 5x a week need around 60g-70g of protein a day. Yes, all the protein you don't use will mainly be stored as MUSCLE GLYCOGEN. Actually not that much gets stored as fat.

And protein shakes can actually help you gain muscle mass, but personally I wouldn't touch them as there has been alot of empirical theories that prove that they can cause long time kidney damage if taken overdoses.

And anyway the best way to build is to increase the intensity of which you train. And to overload your bodies maximum capacity.

No Soy, you're very wrong. You're assuming we are all like ronnie coleman or jay cutler size. 15g of protein is correct for 14-18 year olds.

You go to the gym 5x a week? Why don't you post a picture of yourself to prove this.

I don't need to provide proof on my efforts thanks.

And I looked it up, 15g is for the average 14-18 year olds, and i didn't see you make that out?
I was pointing out that different bodys will have certain demands

Sometimes I go more than 5x a week, why should it be of your concern?
I'm 166 pounds, 5"11 and 9.83% body fat. If you want conformation of this I will be happy to exploit myself on youtube :eusa_snoo

You said you won't prove yourself to me but yet you offer to "exploit" yourself on Youtube? And by that you mean search around for somebody who is big, download the video and upload it to your channel right?

I am also 5"11 and am around 150 pounds - most of it being muscle but I don't need 70g of protein to get big? I didn't state it because I thought people would have common sense and figure out that if you want to build huge muscles you need more protein. 15g is suffice for your average teenager looking to gain anywhere up to 20-30 pounds of solid muscle.

lol, well reason why i'm not flexing with my right arm is because I suffered a shoulder injure which a few muscle fibres tore from the bone somewhere in the posterior reigion.

Was about 3 months ago, so iv'e only been able to lift weights on my right arm for about 2 weeks now

I'm around 14-15 inches all around. I've only just started working on my chest again:

Bench press.
Incline bench press.
Chest flies.
Push ups.
Dips.

All you need :P
Not bad arms, could do with getting some more definition though.

Around about that yes. Muscle takes time to grow.. inexperienced people think it grows in a matter of weeks but it takes months and months for it to develop.
