Right, I'm getting a laptop for Christmas to use at my mum's and dad's (saves me having 2 desktops) and for use at school (coursework and so on) and I have the choice bettwen a MacBook (the black one, can't remember specs) and a Asus EEE PC (701 4GB).
Here's my pro's & con's of each:

MacBook Pro's:
Looks sexy.
Can connect iPod to it.
Longer battery life.
All Leopard features.

MacBook Con's:
Higher chance of being stolen (but my school's general allright and I doubt anyone would.)
Expensive.

Asus Pro's:
Small.
Can run Windows as a prime OS so can integrate with school network.
Cheap.
Still has the built-in webcam and mic (although reviews say they're bad quality.)

Asus Con's:
4GB HDD.
Would probably crash if I had iTunes, Firefox and WLM all on at once (if I used XP, which I almost definatley will)
512 RAM.
Can't connect iPod.
Low battery life.

I guess that list leans towards MacBook, but thats about £800 (- VAT) and the Asus is £200 (- VAT) :( Can anyone suggest which of the two I should get?

you wont be able to run windows on the 701 you would need 900 or 901

Wrong. Not only can you install your own XP license on an EEE701, but they're sold with both Xandros AND XP. Moreover some rather clueless people have even decided to use Vista on the 701.

I would get the EEE, but I would get the 901. More space, bigger screen, more RAM comes with it, better processor.

Rumours are that new MBs will be released on Oct. 14. It can't hurt to wait until then.

Wrong. Not only can 2GB surfs run XP, but so can 4GBs. See http://eeeuser.com for instructions on how to install XP into an EEE. Not all 701s are surf versions by the way, and surf is irrelavent as far as running XP goes. See this: http://event.asus.com/eeepc/comparison/eeepc_comparison.htm

And you can buy 701s with XP coming with it. My 701 I had XP running on it. Then I upgraded to my 901 :D!

The macbook.

But wait untill october the 14th as its expected we will have new macbooks. Leopard is verry sleek and should intergrate into the school network just as well as windows.

Ah I know Leopard's sleek, I use it on my Mac Mini.
What I meant is, my school have developed an application to get student/teacher laptops onto the wireless network which runs around the entire school. And, naturally, the app only works on Windows.

It seems like I'm going with the MacBook, unless it turns out too expensive, then I'll be getting a Asus 901. Thanks guys!

*software :P! Yes software's important. Vista's useless but XP is sufficient. OSX isn't, to me, worth having to fork out an extra thousand dollars, just to get half the specifications as my PC.
