If you don't have a Creative Xmod & a Mac, stop reading now, you'll be wasting your time :P

I'm getting a Mac mini delivered next week and the prices of decent quality USB headsets are out of my range.

I already have a cheap £10 non-USB headset (jack plug) and I know for a fact that non-USB headsets don't function on Macs because they use a different kind of Aud-In port to Windows (I've tested the headset with my PowerMac G5 and it only gets Aud-Out from Mac).
What I was hoping to do was get a Creative Xmod (which has a Aud-In as well as Aud-Out) and plugging the headset into the Xmod and plugging the USB end of the Xmod into my Mac mini.

This brings up two issues I hope you guys can help me on;
1) Is the Xmod compatible with Mac? (I guess the guys with a Xmod AND a Mac are the only people who'll be able to help on this one :P)
2) My headsets a crap one from Tesco, would I have issues with that going into the Xmod? (I guess anyone with a Xmod and jack-plug headset can figure this one out for me)

Thanks!

Nick.

I don't know what a creative xmod is, but I know for a fact that in the Mac Mini's and my iMac, my old standard jack headset works, the one I used to use with my PC.

:S??

Xmod is a external sound card which connects via USB to improve audio quality, http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=209&subcategory=668&product=15913.

I guess I forgot to take into account that Apple would have probably changed the sound socket since my PowerMac...

Still could do with knowing if Creative Xmod works with Mac anyway because I'm interested in getting one? (I know the website might say it does, but that isn't always true. :P)

The site does say it works with macs. I own a Mac Mini and there is no way I could just stick in a mic jack and it works. It does for speakers but thats a different port anyway. I bought myself a USB desk mic and headset anyway. The XMOD will do the job, looking at is.

Edit; i know you said the website says it does etc. But its the makers website so it has to be true if not, then its kinda false advertising.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I mean on my current PowerMac, when I plug the headset in, i get stuff coming from the headphones but the mic is seemingly ignored.
I think this is actually not an accident by apple looking at google... http://www.biloca.com/blog/?p=25
Just read that fully, and it seems to be that it should work with the Mac because the reason why it doesnt work by default is the mic isn't powered coming out of the socket on the Mac, i'm pretty sure the Xm would give it power.

And i know thats what the website says; but you know how it is nowadays, companies will say anything to make you buy their stuff :P
I guess i could just walk into town and get a Xm and see if its any good. Can always take it back if it isnt, providing argos don't exclude it from the money back guarantee like they normally do....

Yeah creative products I heard are very good so yeah it should all work, as its powered by a USB. So that gives the two jacks at the front the power, therefore you get to use headsets with the jacks and the microphone will work.

When my Mac mini arrives, I'll be walking out to get one and try it out.
If it doesn't work or whatever, I'll just take it back. :)
