Is there any point in actually installing Linux on my PS3?
How does it benefit me?

Well if you can't see a point don't do it :)
I use it for school work and basic tasks away from my main pc.

best thing to get is Yellow Dog 6. Built purposefully for the ps3, it has all the wifi drivers working.

built for the ps3, so if you are planning on doing it your best bet is to use this version.

But overall does it just turn my PS3 into a PC?

erm, very basically. You can wordprocess and browse the internet. There's the Gimp on there and all the usual programs but it's not going to be fast or have any 3d acceleration at all.

Nah it won't keep it as it is...
Dark_Alex (the maker of PSP's custom firmware) is making a custom firmware for the PS3 - i'd wait for that.

Unless you're a serious PS3 and Linux genius; no. If you are, then you can use yellow dog on the PS3 to create programs and modify PS3 game files so that you can cheat. Cheats that you can do on the computer (eg. aimbot on call of duty 4) can be done on the PS3 by installing Linux on it so you can have a fiddle, the same way you fiddle on a PC.
