Hey basicially im buying a imac, and im in year 10. Im getting hopefully if everything goes to plan, a 20" one, 500gb hardrive, 4gb ram, 2.66 ghz. Getting wireless keyboard and mouse with it too. I know macs last a long time, but I need this for uni aswell as im paying like 1 and a bit grand for it, (im getting iworks, and final cut pro). So will it last me till Im about 18 so about 3 and a bit years? longer if possible :P. Atm Im so unpatient waiting to get one im getting it in like 2 or 3 weeks and I cant bare being on vista or a pc any longer!

Yeah the iMac should last you for that long, people still use them old emacs to this day.

You're only in year 10, you've got another 3 years at least until you can go to uni.
I would wait until you go to college/6th form to buy one.

Im runnin an '05 imac. And I should imagine i will be for at least another 18-24 months unless support for PPC drops to nothing...
An Intel mac probably will last for a while longer

As said, if you've got to make it last that long then I would wait until 6th form, It will be a long wait, but at least your machine will last you right through Uni with decent specs :)

I believe the average life span (in terms of specifications relative to others) of a computer is four years, so you should easily get that from your Mac. I love my MacBook to bits! :)

Well, they are moving away from the PPC Architecture so iTunes etc wont be supported.
But that was to [ALEX] your iMac will be intel and will be fine, im just saying is that you could get FAR better specs for less money if you waited a couple of years and then it would easily last you until after Uni.
Yes, it will last you until your 18, possibly longer.

OK well you've said 2.66ghz, I'm going to assume thats a dual core?
2 cheap computers for 1.5 years each will last you longer than an expensive one for 3 years. Technology is rapidly getting better and more affordable.
Don't fork out now, and put the money you save into a fund for a new one..
"im getting iworks, and final cut pro"
I'm going to assume these are programs, before you pay for them (Unless they're free) Perhaps check if they can be pirated/downloaded? Might save you some money.

Don't get the Apple Wireless keyboard and mouse.
I have the keyboard and I can't move it any further away from the Mac then about 5 inches (it sits on my desk as close up to the Mac as it can go) and I've heard the wireless mighty mouse messes around at startup and goes all wonky when used with the wireless keyboard.
Don't get Apple ram, get 1GB of ram pre-installed then buy it off crucial, should save you a bit. And that Mac should last you about 6-7 years I reckon, if you keep it in good nick. Probably a lot longer, but it's future proofed for about 5 years.

Ever thought your wireless keyboard has a fault? I seen some of them wireless keyboards further then you have it. But yes I agree on Nick about the Ram.

Who's to say it's a fault and not because my iMac is connected wirelessly to my router?
Also, for Uni, I would suggest a laptop. Therefore maybe get a cheap iMac now (the base one) with no added extras, which will last you 3+ years, the invest in a MacBook/Pro for Uni. :)

I honnestly think thats just yours. I have a mate that has a mac mini with one and he can sit in his bed thats over the other side of the room and use the wireless keyboard and mouse.

I never said it was a 100% fault. I said ever thought about it? As I seem them further then your claiming they can go up to, thats all. I also wouldn't think it be your router.

There a lots of complaints about the range of the keyboard if you search Google. A lot of them also say it's due to their computer being connected wirelessly, I tried it with ethernet but it didn't help because the router is still near by.

I'm pretty sure you can change the channel of your keyboard and mouse and even the routers to stop this happening.
