View Full Version : Building a PC

Hey. :P
My dad and I are thinking about making a new custom build PC. So yes anyway, I have some questions that needs answering please so we can decide whether to go forward with it or not.
- How easy is it to build one? (Is it just fit and screw etc.)
- If it was for gaming what would be the price range of building one?
- Which store(s) are the best for components/who are the cheapest also?
So that's it for now. Might consider just getting a Dell if it's not worth the hassle.
(+REP to those who've answered the questions)

It's easy if you know what your doing, but a headache if not. It's good to have some experience in the field.
- If it was for gaming what would be the price range of building one?Depends what sort of thing your planning really. I'm building one at the moment with a budget of £500-600 and that gets you something pretty nice.

Aria.co.uk (http://www.aria.co.uk) have some pretty good deals and prices.

There a LOADS of tutorials around Google if you search.
www.Aria.co.uk (http://www.Aria.co.uk)
www.eBuyer.com (http://www.eBuyer.com)
www.overclockers.co.uk (http://www.overclockers.co.uk)
www.scan.co.uk (http://www.scan.co.uk)

Your probably looking at about £500 for a very decent machine.

Thanks for those sites, ebuyer is only 20 mins from me (felt like telling you that). £400-600 will probably be our budget. +Rep :)
Edit: Got to spead. I rarely rep people so it might take a few years for you to get it :P

It's easy. Just plugging bits in and a few screws here and there. Spend about the amount you specified on the base unit. Buy online from places like Aria or Ebuyer (or go to them if you're close). getting a Dell may come to around a similar price but where's the fun in that?

Yeah it's at Howden (next to Goole)
And thanks Nick +rep. Agreed about the not really fun not building it yourself thing. :)

I know get off canal join the Ouse and we're there haha. We're in a town where there's millions of motorways and also rivers that could take us anywhere xD

I built my own and it cost me around $950-1000. So approximately £425-500.
I would recommend buying parts instead of buying from Dell, because they tend to have much slower machines, smaller memory, the graphics cards are horrible.
Also you can essentially customize to specifications. Like for me, I'm a gamer so I made sure I had a very nice graphics card, a 19" monitor to save some cash (About £100) instead of buying the 20" or 21"...besides the fact that the screen looked watered down with a bigger screen. The memory is also a huge factor. I have a massive music library and it's only putting a dent right now into the entire thing, lol.
Find out what you require:
-Memory
-Monitor Size (Do you REALLY need a 20"-21", save some £/$$)
-Graphics Card (Can't stress this enough)
-Does the machine need extra cooling? Might need to consider installing fans.
That's all for now.

Thanks for those tips.
Memory I'm hoping to get 3gb or 4gb. The monitor, I have a 21 inch one in the garage which hasn't been used for a while. Graphics card I need to find out which are decent nowadays - I've seen threads say the 8800 is a decent one for gaming, don't know about fans but more the merrier I guess.
Thanks +Rep

I thought that also. But I heard from people's experience it's just really good.

If people have custom built PCs, if you have time to do so, could you list what parts you bought then I'll have the general idea of what to get. :)

the GTX280 is futureproof, or the ATI 4700x2 or whatever it is.

Thanks for this list. I won't be needing the Vista because I've got that ready :P So really in the price range xD. Also I can now look at sites other than ebuyer to see where I can find the cheaper products :P

Look at Tom's first post in this thread for that then. Overclockers are extremely highly recommended. Possible the best e-tailer out there?. The aftersale service is superb, but their prices are higher than most places. I also recommend Aria as the prices are cheap and their shop/warehouse is near me :). Another is microdirect.

I recommend Novatech, when my 2 week old motherboard died I had a new one in 4 days.
They paid for the shipping back to them, then they paid for overnight shipping back with a new board.

What we're going to do is go through the sites for the items, then see who're cheaper then save up a few weeks/months then we're actually going to do this thing.
So thanks to those who have answered/helped me. :D
