I've made a partition for it to go on, do I need to format it? If so should it be NTFS or FAT32 and what should the allocation unit size be?

Thanks.

5-10GB should be enough, I think it depends on the Linux Distro, but Ubuntu automatically formats for you (And partitions too if need be).

Most have set partitions when installing, if you format yourself doesn't really matter i don't think :P
