I believe that it updates at 15 minutes past each hour, therefore I assume you will be banned in 8 minutes.

A bit of preemptive banning there.

How comes the forum has a schedule when it comes to updating? I've never seen that before. Don't member ranks go up a rank per hour when you've been upgraded for whatever reason, be it expired VIP etc?

Theres an option in admincp under maintanaince which sets the time of everything and how long till it updates. If it was every minute, the server would die (if thats for everything).
You can also set up extra jobs for it there like auto backup eveyr 24 hours so it's great!

Its a preset, its how vBulletin runs, I discovered it recently when I was updating userranks. Basically there are a lot of processes and upgrades that run (you'd be amazed by the random processes, there's one that like summarizes all posts and sends it somewhere) so in order to not kill the forum each has allotted times. Some update daily, some at a certain time after the hour, some a certain time (or two) every day etc.
vBulletin was made to run that way to make running processes (or cronjobs I believe they're called in ACP) less server-intensive.

How strange :S In IPBs it's instant, it has less chance of crashing the server, because it will change straight to the update rather go up in stages, it uses alot less power due to this. Very strange, maybe that's why the whole reply feature is a bit rubbish lately, because it tries to make every effort to make it less server-intensive, but kinda ruins the whole atmosphere with lag.
