Although they must make a fortune, the price is a bit hefty for common people..

There are many more cheaper/free bulletin boards, but vBulletin pretty much ***** on all of them. Because of that, people (inc "common" people) are willing to pay them prices.

You dont need to renew an owned licence.. Hence the term "Owned". You pay a one time fee and pay only that.

You didn't click on any of the vb links did you.

The cost to renew a owned vb yearly is about $20 if you don't they although you can continue to host it on your site you loose most of members area access (ability to download latest version etc)

I'm probably wrong but I thought it was a one off fee for the forum and then every 6 months you had to pay an additional fee if you wanted updates?

The owned vBulletin Forum license allows you to run the software on your site indefinitely. Along with this license, you will receive one year of free updates. Beyond the first year, a nominal fee of $60 (or $40 if purchased within 60 days of the license expiring) is payable to obtain updates for an additional year.
