Been posted here: http://www.habboxforum.com/showthread.php?t=521365

I've been following it's story all week and it seems pretty good however it has no support for multiple Google accounts and Google Maps apparantly have more features on the iPhone.

I don't know where it sits in the market though, it sort of fills a gap which wasn't needed. You had the business end of the market which has been enjoyed by Windows Mobile & Blackberry for many many years, and then we had the introduction of the iPhone (And iPod Touch) which sort of made the whole smartphone thing 'Cool'. It featured music and video players etc. It didn't compete with WM & BB, it just opened Smartphones up to a lot more people.

But this doesn't compete in either market, it competes with them all, and loses IMO. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge user of Google applications but Windows Mobile and Blackberry is excellent for business, it synchronizes with Outlook & Microsoft Exchange Server very well, and that's basically all the phones do (They do other things but this is the whole purpose of them). No serious business uses Google Docs or Google Calendar so I have no idea what use Android is for business's wanting to organise employees outside the Office and keep everything in sync.

Then we have the Android bit which tries to compete with iPhone, it has a rather poor looking MP3 Player and has a deal with 'Amazon MP3 Store' which looks very much like Apples DRM Store, but it's music collection is no where near as vast. The web browser is also very similar to Safari and of course on the iPhone's you get excellent synchronization with iTunes and you get a lot more space for songs (Micro SD Cards shouldn't be used as MP3 Players).

Seems to be selling well but I think the phone has no real purpose and if you look elsewhere, you can do everything better. And now I'm wondering why I've gone off on one when no one cares about the Android on here LOL.

The G1's firmware is open source so people can make edits on it ect. Also when people make apps for it they don't have to run them through Google where as with the iPhone apple check all apps and wont let any apps they dont like be used on the phone (EG. porn, jailbreaking apps, apps that use lots of bandwidth).

Apple is restrictive and wants to make a buck on everything..

Google is less restrictive and wants to put an ad on everything.

I'd sacrifice having an ad on something for more freedom with something I paid a lot for ;P

The G1 has incredible software/firmware on it with the potential to easily own the iphone in every conceivable way. To expand on what dentafrice said, google are less restrictive in the fact that they aren't restricting anything at all. Every app sold through their marketplace has a killswitch in case the app is proven to be malicious but it will only be used in that case, whereas apple use their killswitch simply if they don't like an app or think it might compete with them. Google are also allowing people to simply download apps onto their PC and phone like any normal program; you don't have to use their marketplace if you don't want to, so they don't have (and don't want) any control over what you put on it, unlike apple.

Since it's open source, google are allowing anyone to use the OS for whatever purpose they want making whatever edits they want which makes the phone have almost infinate capabilities. I also haven't heard anything about advertisments in any form so I'm not sure how you arrived at that conclusion. There are a couple of drawbacks with it, such as lack of onscreen keyboard or video playback support but because of the open source nature that will (and probably already has been) quickly rectified.

The hardware, on the otherhand, is a massive pile and aside from the high quality of the touchscreen do the OS a horrible disservice. It looks horrible, is hard to use the keyboard because of the bump where the hard buttons are and doesn't have a headphone jack (not a standard one anyway, there's a propiertary one that works with their headphones and you can get adapters but that's just irritating).

Once some decent hardware for it is out then it will be a great phone.

LOL so will YOU be getting on then?

I'm at the point of g1/iphone for Christmas.... Not positive what to go for.
