Ok so I accidentally unplugged my external hardrive whilst it was copying files and now my computer won't recognise it... It keeps trying to reinstall drivers for the device and cannot find them/doesn't install properly, seriously any help would be great because otherwise I am going to get in sooooo much trouble

+REP and hugs for any really good help :)

Windows usually installs them automatically I know but did it come with a CD? And what model external is it?

It didn't come with a disk and it is a WD Passport... It was already installed but I plugged it back in and now it just says device not recognised and trys to install it again and fails

Sorry but that isn't helpful because he reformatted his and he also is talking about the diference between two computers, this is the same computer and it just isn't working with it, I also tried it on another computer that it worked fine with yesterday and now it is not working on that either... Thanks for trying though :)

Is your HDD one which connects via USB or connects to your router ?

If it is USB connection then try a different USB port, it works for me when that happens.

It is a usb one but it is not to do with which port I use as I have checked them all and used other computers and it still doesnt' work. It is almost definately a problem with the harddrive not the computer..

Let's face it - you probably killed the hard drive.

Yes, but each USB Hard Drive has a casing, with a HD drive in it

Pretty sure stephen is correct on this one. had a old HDD lying around and got a case for it and i did exactly the same and it did exactly the same as what has happened to you. But differance is for me it was no loss as it was like a 40gb old ide hdd.

If the HDD has failed and is dead you cant unless you take it to a local computer store who do data retervil.
