Ugh, without a sim card in it, I can't even check to see what version it's on.

what does jailbreak mean? All I want to do is use an Orange sim card in it

Yes... and you have to jailbreak ("hack") Apple's default firmware to do it :P

Is it an iPhone 3G or just iPhone?

(3G has a curved plastic black or white back, the normal iPhone as a metal back)

Umm 1. you can't on the iPhone, 2 that wouldn't help in anyway..

they can be unlocked application wise etc, but not to all networks.. yet however 2.2 BETA was cracked.

Not at all, you can unlock the iPhone without jailbreaking it.
