View Full Version : Just wondering
what the point in that limit is on the 6 characters or more per post thingy.
So like i cant type a post:
"Hi" coz its too short. I think it should atleast be taken off in spam or whatever, because well, if someone is gonna spam then they'd spam with a few more characters, wont really slow them down greatly.

Well it is precisely for preventing spam that isn't in the spam section. It isn't meant to fully prevent people obviously but for example its stops people sayin "Good" in the graphics section so that they actually have to post constructivly :)

It's a basic VB thing I think, you can't turn it off.
Just type;
Hello!
Instead :)

Tbh I agree with you. I don't know why it's there but if it's for anti-spam it won't make much use.
-Eyeless-, someone could just post 'Very Good' then.

It can be turned off and on and changed as on some forums I have seen a 15 Char limit :)

Yes but its a deterent not a prevention as there is no way of preventing it, so if they do post like that it is pointless posting and so the poster will be asked to be constructive.

Well then if they werent gonna post constructively, then they'd put "Gooooooooood!" or w/e

Its to prevent spam posts (in other forums) and I don't believe its possible to restrict it to forums?

I think your right I think it can only be changed for the entire forum or none of the forum.. But we will get an answer from an admin probably :)

There's ways you can get around it, obviously it doesn't matter much in the spam section anyway. But I'll let you figure it out ;), it's better this way anyway I guess, if too many figured out how to get past the character limit there wouldn't be much point in having it ;).
In response the the post above, the character limit is a global vBulletin setting and cannot be set per forum.

I know how to bypass it aswell but I would be contradicting myself if I used it or told anyone :D but I do think it works and that it shouldn't be replaced for the reason I mentioned above

Hmm.. These ways around it you speak of...
it's not hard to say like "that's great. Good job", instead of saying "hi".
This is for posting constructively

He was referring to replies more in the spam forum though, rather than general forum posting.

In the spam forum just add a few dots, its a vBulletin default and for the most part it shows users that they shouldn't be posting things that short. More experienced members know when its appropriate.
