After the basketball match yesterday, my teammates (Clifford and Kelvin) were fooling around. Clifford jumped and touched the rim, then claimed that he can jump higher than Kelvin, so Kelvin started a run-up from mid-court, sprinted towards the basket, jumped and grabbed the rim. Unfortunately, because his run-up was so fast, the momentum carried him forwards, causing him to lose balance, so he spun 180 degrees in midair and landed on his left arm. At first we were all laughing 'cause it looked pretty funny. But then we saw the blood. What actually happened when he landed was that both the bones in his arm snapped, piercing through the skin, causing the bleeding. His forearm was actually bent outwards by around 70 degrees... And through the hole in the arm, you could actually see the bones and muscles...
We called the ambulance straight away whilst trying to stop his bleeding and taking his mind off it. He was sent to the hospital after the surgeons put his arm in a cast and sling etc. His operation was scheduled for this morning and I think it took around three hours.
How long will this actually take to heal? He's our only center (though I can play center, I prefer forward) and we have two more competitions coming up... Remember, BOTH bones in his arm are broken.

Yes, that actually did happen. Roughly how many months should it take? Our competitions end in January, so I doubt he'd be able to play in them anyway, but I'm guessing it will take a long while for him to play well again...

well the worst thing i've done is brake my metatarsal (slight brake) which took about 7 weeks to heal properly and judging by the sound of it i'd say at least 2x that but then again i'm no doctor lol

I'm not quite sure what they did with the bones during the surgery. If it's one bone, then it can just be put in a cast, right? But if it's two, would they have to use screws and metal plates?

IMO it wont be for 12 months. It's the same as a leg break for basketball as it is in football, if it was one bone it would be 6 months.

Not sure if anyone here has their medical degree, so here probably isn't the best place to ask.

Your friend breaks his arm very badly and you're more concerned about not having a center in your team?

The bone has pierced through the skin meaning the bone has snapped completley. I'm saying atleast a year.

Well he's in hospital and just had surgery yesterday. Why should I ask here about whether he's okay or not? You people don't even know him. I've already asked his closer friends (he's in the year below me) about his conditions and they all say he's doing fine.

Erm, yeah, that'd be great, wouldn't it? Shoving through everybody who was surrounding him to help him take his mind off it and then taking pictures of it.

I broke both bones in my right arm a few years ago, and it only took about 6 weeks to heal.
My arm was still pretty weak though even after 6 weeks, so I'm not sure how long it will take before he can play normally again, I doubt he will be playing properly for at least 2/3 months though.

Thanks for that. So it'll be 6 weeks before his cast comes off?
he obv. not that athletic if hes playing (i assume high school ball if he can touch rim) and falls on his arm. but than again probably unlucky since he made the team.
I'd say 3-4 months but thats a rough guess.

It was 6 weeks for me, not sure if that's how long it takes for everyone else.
But his arm might still be really fragile after those 6 weeks, so he won't even be able to train for a while after the cast comes off.

Well he did a long run-up from mid-court, so it was the momentum...

I think the competitions will have ended 6 weeks later, so he'll just be training for next season. Thanks for that, anyhow.
Sounds bad, I bet he was in so much pain.
would be worse if there was a pic reading bout it isn't bad :P

I don't think it really hurted him much. It was just after a basketball game and he practically played the full game, so there was quite a load of adrenaline running through his body.
