Reason being I'm getting a new motherboard by christmas, and I can rearm this 4 times. 120 days. Seeing as I'd need to reformat for the new mobo I figured I may as well test this for a bit :)

You could go with phenom or better version of AMD dual core, but i'd suggest you save your monies and get a new mobo + processor instead of new AMD one :P

Microsoft seem to have only put the features that are fully working into build 8601 so it should be quite stable. There are other features in the build that are there but are not stable so they haven't been added yet, for example you can set an rss feed of images as your desktop background, so every time the rss feed updates you get a new background :P

re-ran test and got the following:

Mine shows as 5.6, then I overclock my CPU and put my RAM at 801MHz instead of 800 and it boosts it up to 5.9? :S

You realise its DDR, which means double data rate, so 333.4 x 2 = 666.7/667Mhz.

Nope, the 8500GT isn't really good any more. the 1GB is to stop the bottleneck on the 512MB version.

Do it even if it's RAID 1 if you're bothered about the safety of your data. In that system, hard drives are the bottleneck and a RAID array will increase your performance by a large noticeable amount.

Unlucky, I spent £22-23 on 2 x 1GB sticks and they got 5.9.

I just spent £37 on 2 x 2GB 1000MHz sticks which should also get 5.9. They should be arriving on Tuesday - damn bank holiday :(.

Overclocking, ive got decent cooler, but my nforce 680i motherboard won't let me go any higher than 3.0ghz and i want higher, so im getting a P5Q Deluxe.

If i did that i would buy a new motherboard to support the new socket, the i7 and ddr3 memory. but i don't have that kind of money at the moment so iv'e decided for a year im going to oc my quad to possible 3.6 / 4.0ghz.

Getting a Q6600 to 4GHz stable is going to be very difficult. Especially on air. Perhaps it would be better to invest in a Q9450 / Q9650. I was thinking about this as my Q6600 is only good for 3.7GHz - after that, it won't get stable above that no matter how much voltage I pump into it. 45nm quads are the way to go for 4GHz+.

By all means, you should have a pop at it though. I mean, if you enjoy overclocking you should get some fun out of it.

Although, you won't see any performance gains if you overclock your Q6600 from 3.6 to 4.0 anyway, I say get a Vendetta 2 or some Watercooling and run it at 3.6GHz constant.

Actually, yes i will see a performance increase from 3.6ghz to 4.0ghz, because i use my computer for 3D Video Editing, After Effects etc. and encoding. Those programs heavily use the cpu.

Not 400MHz IMO, it'll shred a couple of minutes off encodes, which isn't really worth it for the hassle.

Windows 7 has a maximum score of 7.9, whereas Vista only goes up to 5.9.

They won't show it on the back of the box. It does however, show up in the games folder in Vista and 7. But unfortunately you have to buy the game first to find that you can't run it... and you can't return PC games.
