Several passengers and crew suffered minor injuries in the landing

Rome's Ciampino airport has temporarily closed after a Ryanair flight from Frankfurt suffered "substantial damage" as it made an emergency landing.
The budget airline said the plane had experienced problems after birds were sucked into the engine as it came in to land at Rome's second-largest airport.
Passengers left the Boeing 737 using emergency chutes.
The plane remains on the runway with one engine resting on the tarmac because of damage to the landing gear.
It is being examined by Ryanair engineers and the Italian Aviation Authority.

Ryanair passenger

Ryanair said the airport, which hosts several budget airlines, was likely to remain closed for the rest of Monday.
Ryanair flight FR4102 from Frankfurt to Rome had 166 passengers on board.
Reports say two cabin crew and at least three passengers were taken to hospital with minor injuries. One passenger said an engine had begun to smoke as the plane was coming in to land and it then descended rapidly.

Passengers describe the emergency Ryanair landing in Rome

"People were crying, it was terrible," he added.
Another passenger said he thanked God that nobody had died.
A picture of the plane on the Ryanair website appeared to show red marks on the nose cone and wings - presumably from the birds.
Other Ryanair flights would be diverted to Rome's other airport, Fiumicino, until Ciampino was re-opened, the airline said.
At least 219 people have been killed worldwide since 1988 as a result of wildlife strikes to aircraft, according to the organisation Bird Strike Committee USA.
A US Federal Aviation Administration study has found that between 1990 and 2007, more than 82,000 wildlife strikes were reported at more than 1600 American airports.
The phenomenon causes billions of dollars of damage to aircraft worldwide.

Bird Strikes, very common. Must of been a flock of them to be honest, blood all over the nose and everything. Congrats to the pilots for doing their job and getting the plane down safety without any major problems :)

Poor RyanAir, its funny how they're the only company who'd be in the news for an emergency landing. Funny that.

Did the gear collapse on landing then? Or where the doors damaged by the strike?

You can't help it if a bunch of suicidal birds jump in your engine though :P.

I know, but it's funny how RyanAir get targeted for this. I'm not blaming RyanAir for it, it's the media I'm a bit irritated about.

ryanair (at this time of writing) have had no aircraft written off.

over at airliners.net there was a speculation of a double engine failure due to the bird strike. doubt its true

If you think about the size ad weight of one of those things coming down to the ground at speed it's going to be really hard. Peoples organs inside you can get damaged from heavy imapcts like in cars, loose items, bags in the cabin. Hitting heads on overhead lockers.

The mass panic from the peope who immediantly believe it's going to blow up becuase the word emergancy has been used, so they all riot to get of the plane people get trampled between each other and becuase of the tilt of the aircraft coming down the slides could be dangerous. All sorts.

Yeah I heard about that 'Double' engine failure as well. The gear would of got damaged most likely on landing, probably came in too fast depending when the birds actually hit the engine and well yeah, hit hard, gear collapsed and s=damaged the body work above it.

Over at the well known rumour network, someone is quoting someone on the ground at CIA who spoke with the captain of said aircraft with this chain of events:

- multiple bird strikes on no. 1 engine
- decision to go-around
- multiple bird strikes on no. 2 engine
- engines caught fire when spooling up
- almost complete loss of thrust
- captain has to abandon go-around
- captain lands aircraft rather heavily due to lack of thrust
- left gear collapses
- aircraft comes to rest a short distance from the end of the runway

I heard the same as Matt.

NO1 engine faliure, executed go around, NO2 faliure, committed to land.. The captain would of course rather land on the runway than crash elsewhere - Thus decended at a rapid rate, with a higher speed and nose down attitute than normal in order to get it on the runway.

Which would have ment a firm landing, thus damaging the landing gear - Although you might not think so, it was a good landing and both up front did the job they are paid to do.

Remember the BA crash at Heathrow?

They are similar incidents, but the BA had a problem with commands for thrust. The Ryanair got beat up by birds.

Both are concidered a crash although the BA was worse admittedly.

Yeah, pretty close to the road as well, would of be much much worst if it didn't make it, but the flight crew have done well on both of these incidents.

If anyone wants to watch a bird strike in action, a spotter filmed this;
