Hey yeah, my dad thinks its a waste of time buying freeview+ or top up tv, and thinks I should buy a recordable dvd player. He said I might be able to do a setting on my tv if I plug my usb in to my wii and set it to record to that usb. I don't see how that would work, is there anything close to that idea that would work?

You could look at Hauppauge or ATI's TV Card range for Windows PCs, or get Play TV for PS3.

But no, you couldn't record to USB from a Wii or something.

There is a freesat HD box coming out soon that records onto a HDD. You can then copy the program onto a usb memory stick or external HDD.

I didn't think you can move files from a PVR type device like that to USB...?

thanks for the ideas, well I'm on a mac so I can't do the PC stuff. Haven't got a ps3 either, would love one though. I'm trying to cheat my way out of buying a recordable dvd player, because things like top up tv and freeview+ are just things with hardrives in unless you buy the extra channels. So I'm trying to just use my usb stick as a hardrive? Doubt that will work anyway.
