View Full Version : Making a Social Networking Site

Well guys i've not made a serious site in a long time but i'm going to start again, i've purchased a Social Networking script called SocialEngine, Its amazing as a base for my site (I know a lot about PHP, HTML and some MySQL) and of course i'm going to develop on it, i just need some ideas and help.
The idea..
At first i thought about culture, with indie kids, scene kids, moshers, emos etc. and when you join the site it will ask you what your into etc, and assign you a group (indie kid etc.) and you chat with people in the same group as you etc. but then i thought it would cause rivalry with chavs, scene kids etc. So that idea was out the window. But now I'm just thinking of filling in the things that other social networks miss out and combine them together. Give your ideas aswell.
The Name..
iCulture (Ruled out, explained above)
PsychoSocial
SocialCity
SocialSanctuary
iTalk
You guys like any of the above or think of your own? Mention it.
The Staff..
I need moderators, Administrators (especially), coders and designers if your interested PM me please.
The Testers..
Once i've got it working (2 - 3 weeks) I'll need some testers so if your interested PM me.
Thanks,
Kyle

Making a successful social network isn't a £200 job, more in the range of £200,000+.

More in the range of £9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 99 with the market atm.

Haha :P But yeah, to make a successful SN you either need a lot of money or some investors that are willing to put money into a pre-revenue business, which (like Homosexuality said) is pretty hard at the moment because of the state of the economy.
Also, if you're hoping for your site to be popular, NEVER use a pre-made script.

See, invent pays me nightly, he's my 'investor', hence why all my sites are popular.

First of all, i'm building on the pre-made script, A LOT. That was pretty much just the base, and we will see about the investors etc. at the moment i've got quite a lot of money to spare.:)

Really, these websites should be made for fun. There is no chance that your site will get as popular as YouMeO or any other lead social networking website, I created mine for fun and it's used locally for friends, I tried the professional attempt at getting somewhere with and decided to give up - A £200 investment is nothing in social networking.
However, I wish you good luck - but I don't think you will succeed, please note that I am sorry if I offended you, I didn't mean too if I did.
Youmeo uses more than £200 a day atm and it's only got half a million users so we're not the biggest. So plan to spend about £60,000 a month on the basics to get anywhere with a social network ;)

I might be interested in helping as a MOD/Admin.
Youmeo has it's ways, we realised due to the low amount of traffic we were recieving when the site was an absolute mess that it was pointless to annoy our users more :P So because we'd only make about £100 a week from them it didn't seem enough to make it all worth while. So our CFO called us up and said we could remove all ads from the site, because if you remember in the beginning we had a few Google AdSense ads laying around the place.
Still we have our ways of making money as we're fortunate to have a really good management team that can point us in the right direction and keep Youmeo flowing.
Still doesn't say how you do make money? :P

I think what he was saying is that they aren't making money from the site its self, it was more the management, investors but of course, i could be wrong.

I'd reccomend staying away from social network sites, it's such a crowded market at the moment. So unless your social network has a unique point, think Last.fm, then it's very unlikely it will ever get anywhere.

But who have you shown it too? That's what makes the difference, most people just say "Yeah it's nice." not to hurt you ;)

Ok please, the word is suggest - not surgest :|
Also - I could help out on graphics.

My friends (there are normally very critical of what i do) will say if its ****. I've also told a lot of random people i know online so they wouldn't care if they hurt me, so that answers your question :)
Show us then, you'll get some sort of real response.

Using a script that other people can use on there sites isn't going to get you anywhere unless you make some drastic changes to it.

Just start off and see where you can finish, thats what I have to say.
Youmeo makes it's money from investors.. thats quite clear.
Source
20-11-2008, 11:03 PM
That doesn't suffice as making money though, as investors want to see a return... they don't just "give it away".
YouMeO currently doesn't make money from the actual site, it is currently in the stage of making a name for itself - i'm sure when they start rolling they will get deals with sponsorships, media etc...
Thats just from my observations anyway, I obviously can not tell whats going on / happens behind the scenes.

The investors are taking Youmeo seriously as they're staying invested and looks like they're getting more involved daily.

So basically all you've done is installed social engine and added your own logo?

It was no where near as simple as that but if you want to think of it as that, thats fine.

21-11-2008, 11:34 PM
Can we know what you added to it then or changed?
Because right now it's not the best. Everything is white which is really boring :/
And why in the hell is it telling that people that I don't know have added eachother as friends? I don't know them and i don't care if they added someone.

IMO I don't like the look of it, it's too plain, and the nav buttons are like myspace's.

Precisely. Building it is only half the problem. You've got to actually advertise it and that can cost anything from £2 to £20 million.

fail.
Why you ask? Firstly because you're using a pre-made script which is terrible. You claim to have added features but you're unable to name them. Secondly you're trying to succeed in one of the hardest markets there is nowadays. Without investors and a team of dedicated staff you're getting nowhere. Lastly you're going to need major funds (like I said before) and it seems like you don't have that.
If I were you I would just stop now and come up with a good idea and go with that. That's my two cents.

i havnt read all of this thread so sorry if it has already been posted xox
if you want to make a social networking website, make your own script. dont use some premade one that is available to anyone (People can easily null it /release it). your also not going to gain members very easily due to bigger sites such as bebo, myspace and facebook.

I would suggest not using PsychoSocial! Road Runner Records and Slipknot's copyrights would have you for it!

I'm going to make a point, scrap the whole group idea. People generally don't want to be catagorised that way, and somepeople merge between groups and it just complicates things for users. You can see what i look like in my av, if i joined a social networking site and was lablled a scene kid I'd immediatly quit. It's a dense idea, but the idea as a whole is quite nice. [I wrote all that, and THEN when back and noticed you scrapped that idea, but I'll leave it here anyway]. If you call it PsychoSocial it's may class as copyright infringement (Slipknot) plus its just not a good name for it. "Psycho", no. I'm not sure about any of your suggest names. I'm going to have a think and see if i can come up with something good. I'd help code but I'm new to php so I can't aha.
best of luck with the project!
