Its so you can "hack" the OS and install open source and free apps.

Yes, they probably meant they upgraded to 1.1.2 because jailbreaking was finally available for it (oh how I miss the 1.1.1 days when it was just a click to jailbreak :/)..

Jailbreaking is the act of modifying the firmware (Operating System) of the ipod touch or iphone to allow the installation of a application (Installer [2.0 coming soon] Or Cydia) which then is exactly like the AppStore, except everything is free to download.
