phpBB comments wanted

The 2 main contenders for Forums seems to be vB or IPB which cost. So, I have been looking at phpBB which claims to be totally free. It "looks" okay so far, but I have not tested this software myself, and I am reading myself to sleep! :redface_b

What drawbacks does phpBB have? I mean why would you pay for Forum software if phpBB are giving it away?

Well they can look cheap etc and dont have that many advantages. You can still get free IPB's off Cpanel which are the best to go for because they look more professional.

well i use it, it is quick, easy to use but doesnt have as much functions as this forum does.

Banning people is more difficult, you cant have youre own banner, you cant have rep points =S

Its old and outdated and just generaly dosent function as good as IBP

There aren't as masny MODS for it as there are on IPB. And they aren't as good either.

I've seen some, and I agree with splinter, they do tend to look cheap, unless you get a very very very good layout for them.

If you really want a free one, and you dont have cPanel, why not ask someone if they'll give u one via their cpanel, or use IF.

For a free one, id perfer IF than phpBB
