View Full Version : Spotify.com - Last.FM in an iTunes setup!
I was lucky enough to be invited to try out Spotify and I must say it's now my 4th favourite application after Coda, Photoshop then Firefox of course. It allows you to listen to any song in their database which I must say seems to be as large as Last.FMs in a iTunes kind of setup so you get to choose the song rather than Last.FM doing it for you. You can also play albums and setup playlists. The only down side is there are audio adverts every couple of songs but they're often rather entertaining and if you don't want the ads you can pay to remove them.

I personally think that the web-based Grooveshark is better.
It's not an application, so it's avaliable on any computer with Flash.
There are no adverts, no limitations, you can listen to as many songs as you want.. as many times as you want.

Too bad it's Mac only.
Grooveshark doesn't have bad quality music? It has a CD Quality music. Last.FM sounds like a radio.

GrooveShark isn't CD, it's downloaded music people randomly put on and it's not moderated in anyway so random crappy tracks get through. Spotify at least has a song base that is clear and is studio quality rather than the crap on Grooveshark.

Must of hit a spot because greg's always has to be right. Some tracks ive been listening too (elliot minor etc..) sound like 320kb/s through my sony headphones.
Plus grooveshark will have a higher selection of unknown artists due to the way it scours the music networks.

They are CD quality.. where do you think that they got the music? All the music on GS is pretty much ripped off of CDs, or DDL from the artists.
It is moderated, hence why they have the "Flag File" button. They then remove it.
They're not going to sit there and accept/deny every song.. but if songs are found to have bad quality/titled wrong.. they are removed.

Spotify is everything I hoped it would be, its superb.
Seriously, you guys haven't even tried Spotify so how on earth can you comment? I've tried both and Grooveshark is crap compared to Spotify. Matt just grow up and realise that I don't make a point unless I'm right therefore I'm always right - it's a simple theory.

I'm sorry but I have to agree with Greg. After trying Spotify and Grooveshark I can tell you that Spotify has much better quality than Grooveshark.

Well I would love to try Spotify then, after seeing it supports Windows, then I can "correctly" compare the two services.

Last.fm already works with iTunes, and they have an application for their player.

Just tried Grooveshark, the quality is very high from what I can tell, I can hear no difference between my 320kb/s (variable) song and the same song on Grooveshark.

Please say you're not being serious....
If you are you've obviously not quite got what Spotify is. It allows you to search for any song you want then play it, unlike Last.FM which only allows you to input and artist or tag then plays songs in a random playlist that you can't pause or rewind. The Last.FM intergration with iTunes only allows you to post what songs you're listening to the Last.FM site, that's not what Spotify does.

Because there is no difference :P
It is a P2P player, which gets music from people who have installed the uploader application.

Biggest difference is most music on Spotify is uploaded by the label or artist. Grooveshark allows anyone to from what I can see, as I often find really crap recordings of songs which are obviously straight from Limewire.
You can't even comment of the both since you haven't tried them both, where as I have.

I dont think Greg runs it, its ran by a swedish company I think.
Its EU only atm, I could see them expanding to other markets rather easily also.

Not that easily :P RIAA is going to be hard to convince.

I'm using this Grooveshark thing like right now and the first song I searched was CD quality, aswell as everything else I've searched :S
It can't be as bad as you seem to be making it out to be, not saying it's better than this other program but either way Groovesharks pretty good

Because all the songs that Grooveshark has, that aren't just maliciously uploaded (those are deleted pretty fast), are from things like ripped CDs, or Limewire.
Limewire songs come direct from the artist, or ripped from CDs.. which makes them CD quality. They loose maybe.. 5-6kbps from all the transferring done and streaming.
Otherwise it's pretty good.

For Mac OS X, some clever sod has made it so that your songs listened to in Spotify scrobble to iTunes.

There is also a solution for windows :)
