I find it really annoyign when people say christmas is just a thing to get us to spend money and is too over commercialised. All the people that seem to say that expect their parents to spend 100's if not 1000's on them. They all seem to want computers, tv's, ipods, consoles etc.

Hypocrits muchly? x

Im getting a tv, Im trying to limit like a few years ago I would have got 800 quid spent on me easily, now I know with the credit crunch and stuff I'm just going to try and help my mum and dad out.

way spoilt compared to your £800 that you wanted?

PaulMacC
03-12-2008, 11:36 PM
Im not getting £800, I mean when I was 9,10 I would have got spoilt like that but now that Im older I realise what my mum and dad go through to get stuff so I really get 1 main present a year and I try to limit it to around £200-300.

Alkaz
03-12-2008, 11:37 PM
I meant, you said what you want was around £800. And still £200-£300 is alot of money when you think about it, its not actually celebrated, its just a pressie frenzie.

No, I said "Im trying to limit like a few years ago I would have got 800 quid spent on me easily", A few years ago when I was 9 or 10 I would have got 800 quid spent on me for nothing really but now Im older I understand the value of money and I know £300 is a lot of money for some people but it really cant be done now, I'll take it in to consideration next year when Im picking a present.

too many people expect presents from their parents imo. its like the parents must comply with the childrens orders otherwise they're doing something wrong. kinda lame really if you think about it.

PaulMacC
03-12-2008, 11:40 PM
Yea, but my parents spend about 300 quid on me and I spend about 100 quid per gift on my present to my parents, I save up throughout the year and have about 240 in my bank account to spend on gifts for my parents and family. I do small jobs here and there and all the loose change it adds up. So Im not really saying give me a present and giving nothing in return.

Ye same paul, just annoying when like dirrty said, people EXPECT, dont ask and hopefully get something what they ask for. parents seem to want to buy their children THE best gadgets and toys to compete with other parents which is ridicilous! alot of the children dont want the stuff they have and will only do them damage in future not respecting things and then you have the risk of young children being mugge for ipods, phones etc.

PaulMacC
03-12-2008, 11:49 PM
Yeah, a few people from my area are getting loads of stuff but they dont even recognise the value of money even in this economic crisis and expect their parents to deliever through thick or thin.

And the sad thing is, the parents do! I read some woman re-mortaged her house to buy xmas pressies and lost the house :|

Yeah I was watching a documentary called What Would Jesus Buy and a woman who was being interviewed said "I dont care how much I spend, it's for my kids, I dont care if I go into debt"

I know ^ My mum n dad pay for things sort of backwards LOL my mum will get a bank load for so much and then pay if off over the coming year and then get another one nearer xmas, so although its a debt its not if you get me, no idea why she does it but will never spend more than what she has even if she wants to give us more than we want. And generally I dont seem to want much.. anytime of the year so xmas is kwl for me :P

Its just what we have grown up to expect from society's view to Christmas. All those people who say its over commercialised are just trying to make up for some disappointment they have felt on christmas.

I normally just ask for some clothes, nothing big normally. My dad doesn't have much money so I just ask for one small thing from him at Christmas cause I don't want him to think he has to get it.
My aunt and uncle are proper rich, no seriously (http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/specials/rich_list/article3762266.ece) but I don't ask a lot from them because they pay for me going to the school I go to.

Last year I got my laptop (£1100) and my iPhone (about £300 and £45 monthly) aswell as some JBL dome speakers to go with my laptop (about £100 I think) so I did get quite a lot. This year I thought I would help my parents out with the credit crunch so I'm not asking for much this year. I only want a Pioneer music system in my car which shouldn't cost anymore than £500 if I buy it from the right place.

I prefer to give than to receive... I've literally had to think hard on what I want this year! Athough that's made me excited now :D

Christmas to me is just a time to give and receive gifts, and to socialise with friends and family. The latter is the more important part though, I wouldn't care much about the presents, the meal is the bit that does it for me :P

I dont really understand the argument here, if your offered an expensive gift, why say no? they wouldnt off offered otherwise, mum is getting me a 52inch plasma to go in my room and dad is buying me a moped. Although, theese are joint birthday and xmas pressants as my b-day is 20th decemeber so they spoil me rotten over the whole of christmas.

It is too commercialised and these days it is all about money....

I have no problems with shops wanting to cash in - many of them rely on it - it just annoys me that it starts at the end of October.

Christmas would be much, much better if it started on the 20th December and finished on the 27th - there'd be more of a novelty to it.

It just drags, the way it is at the moment - there is no magic to it. I work retail and by the time Christmas actually comes I couldn't really care less about it - I'm just grateful for a day off and the chance to eat some good food and get drunk with my family.
