Well, i think its best when you arent really good friends, because eventually the relationship wil come to an end and it will be awkward. You should be able to get along with them, be able to laugh with them and to make sure noone close to either of you (best friends etc) would get jelous and try to break anything you have up. Most guys will be too shy to ask but if you are ready for the next step then tell him and most would say yeah. Hope this helps
