Tor is a free alternative, If you want to totally cover up your identity you will need a VPN

You can't hide your IP address, you can change it using software, but you can never hide it completely. You can use proxys, which changes it to another IP address, but even then it's easily traced back to your IP.

Well if you wanted to be un traceable, you could walk into a store with something like a fake beard that obstructs your face from the cameras, buy any old laptop with cold hard cash, walk into an internet cafe, do whatever you wanted (usually something illegal) and then destroy the laptop.

People do that, yeah.
